Rivier Roundup: Hoop teams split, volleyball sweeps, men skaters tie

FRANKLIN, Mass. — The Rivier University men’s basketball team lost a heartbreaker Saturday, falling 104-103 in triple overtime to Dean College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest despite 33 points from Odarius Cade.

The loss drops the Raiders to 5-8 in the GNAC, 13-10 overall. Robenson Baguidy had 24 points, Devin Owens 21 and Nik Pignone 13.

An Owens 3-pointer with 26 seconds left in regulation sent the game to OT tied at 76. Dean’s A.J. Weston hit a layup to beat the buzzer to send the game into a second OT and a Pignone jumper forced the third OT.

In the deciding third session, the Raiders fell on a Jayden Madise free throw with no time left.

Riv will try to bounce back vs. Mitchell on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Muldoon Center.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

RIVIER 99, DEAN 51

The Raiders enjoyed a rare easy win, blowing out Dean thanks to 27 points from Lyric Grumblatt and 15 from Alexa Dufries. Sophia Abdallah and Rachel Ginn each had 11 points as the Raiders improved to 7-6 in the GNAC, 9-15 overall.

Jess Carrier added 10 assists for Riv, which hosts Mitchell on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Muldoon for Senior Night.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

RIVIER 3, EMMANUEL 2

RIVIER 3, EMERSON 1

The Raiders enjoyed a tri-match sweep at the Muldoon to move to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in GNAC play. In the win over Emmanuel, the Raiders won a fifth and deciding set 15-8 after splitting the first four, 25-17, 25-13, 22-25, 16-25 in their GNAC opener.

Coming through with 15 kills and six digs was Ly Sokunbuth. Ryan Peace added nine kills and Ethan Soltis eight for the Raiders. Neil Rea had 45 assists.

In the 25-12, 24-26, 25-19, 25-9 win over Emerson, Riv got 31 assists from Rea and 10 kills by Isaac Borges. Sokunbuth, Chris Lezon and Matt McCloskey each had seven kills.

Riv hosts Dean at the Muldoon on Thursday.

MEN’S HOCKEY

RIVIER 2, ANNA MARIA 2

The Raiders got goals by Liam Hennesy in the first and Jon Tavella in the second, but that was it for their scoring as they are now 10-11-3 after a fast-paced contest.

The Raiders had a penalty shot late in the third but AMCATS goalie Cole Johnson made one of his 39 saves. Riv, which got 41 stops by Will Augustine, also got an assist from Hennesy, one from Tyler Duderstadt and two by Damon Kiyawasew.

The Raiders are set to host Franklin Pierce Tuesday at noon.
