It could be a Fab February if you check out these dates

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Feb 4, 2024

Now things get interesting as February has arrived.

It may be the dead of winter, but it certainly has its share of important local, regional and national sports dates, doesn’t it? Here’s a few for you to keep in mind:

MONDAY FEB. 5

We’re still the regular season for hockey and basketball, and the Nashua North-Souhegan skaters are at Alvirne-Milford at Skate 3 at 7:50 in a game that will be big for both teams as they push for tourney berths in their respective divisions. Any time you get to see the Saber-Titan top line in action is a good take.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 7

We’re wrestling – a big one locally in Division II at the Colligadome between two-time defending champion Hollis Brookline and Bishop Guertin AT 6 p.m. Always a classic and a good tourney preview.

SATURDAY, FEB. 10

It’s Super Bowl Eve but also the first NHIAA Championship Saturday of the winter season – the Division I (4:45 p.m.) and II (8:45 a.m.) boys and girls swimming championships at the University of New Hampshire. The Hollis Brookline girls will be defending their state title in Division II, and we’ll look to see who else can emerge with individual efforts in both divisions.

Also on this day, the state gymnastics championships will be held at A2 Gym & Cheer in Salem with two sessions, one at 10 a.m.and the other at 1:30. Locally we’ve always had one of if not the top All-Around for individual success, so let’s see what happens.

SUNDAY, FEB. 11

Yes, Super Bowl Sunday – and NHIAA Indoor Track Championship Sunday as well. This year the event is at Plymouth State, and there will be tons of individual success both in the boys and girls Division I (4:30 p.m.) and Division II (9:30 a.m.). There’s always a few surprises.

And, of course, at 6:30 p.m. will be the world’s main event, the Super Bowl at Las Vegas. Niners? Chiefs? We’ll let you know next week while still wondering why the high schools can’t find a way to schedule the track championships for another day, an annual conflict.

TUESDAY, FEB. 13

Can you believe this is the first day for an NHIAA hoop tourney? The Division III boys baksetball prelims are on this day, and look for Campbell to hopefully playing a home game. The girls tourney begins the following day.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 14

Well, besides being Valentine’s Day, it’s also a big day for a sport many of us still love – baseball. The Red Sox pitchers and catchers report to Fort Meyers for spring training. Always raises the temperature about 20 degrees, doesn’t it? But the question is just how much the fandom still really and truly has the interest it had in the past.

FRIDAY, FEB. 16

A big night for local high school hoop with Nashua South at Merrimack boys, and what has become an annual Bedford-Bishop Guertin boy-girls twinbill, this year at BG – although this year the Bulldogs have a decided edge in both.

SATURDAY, FEB. 17

NHIAA Championship Saturday Part II, with the Division I, II and III wrestling championships, as HB will host Divison II, and Division I will be Londonderry and Division III at Bow. Again, we’ll see if the Cavs can hold off all challenges for a threepeat. It’s also team title day for bowling, and it will be at Merrimack TenPin. And Merrimack will be looking to defend its title.

MONDAY FEB. 19

The Great Northeast Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball tourneys begin with a play-in round, and then the tourney continues with the quarterfinals the next night. We’ll see if Rivier University gets a home game for either night in both men’s and women’s hoop.

It’s also the rematch between the Nashua High School North-Souhegana and South-Pelham hockey teams, the Kings hoping on their Senior Night to avenge a 4-1 loss to the Saber-Titans back on Jan. 10. Puck drops at 6:30 p.m. at Conway Arena, and see you there.

TUESDAY-WEDNESDAY, FEB. 27-28

We end the month with the first sign of light at the end of the long winter tunnel – the start of the Division I boys and girls hoop tourneys and hockey tourneys. The nights all vary by gender and division, and you can check the NHIAA website to be sure. We can tell you girls hockey and Bishop Guertin’s title defense starts on the 27th and the boys Division I hoop and hockey begins on Wednesday.

After all of that, we will usher in the month of March, hoping lambs rule.
