Rivier Roundup: Women’s hoop, hockey pick up wins

NASHUA, N.H. – The Rivier women’s basketball team used a 34-point outing by Lyric Grumblatt to breeze past JWU-Providence by a final score of 77-57 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday afternoon at the Muldoon Center.

The Raiders advanced to 7-12 (5-4 GNAC) while the Wildcats dropped to 8-11 (3-5 GNAC).

Rivier got out to a 16-11 lead after the opening 10 minutes as Grumblatt scored six points, followed by Emily Coleman who hit both of her shots to add four points of her own.

The Raiders poured in 27 points in the second quarter as Grumblatt went off, hitting three of her five three-point attempts on her way to scoring 11 points in the frame to lead 43-30 at the half.

JWU-Providence cut its deficit to seven points 2:38 into the third quarter on a Peyton Oliver layup. The Raiders then pieced together a 9-0 run over the next 3:28 to take their largest lead of the night with a 16-point lead in hand.

Rivier’s lead only increased in the fourth as Grumblatt, Dufries, Guinn, and Anna Stenger all contributed on offense to give the home team a 20-point victory, snapping the two-game skid.

Grumblatt shot 52.2% from the field and went 6-of-12 (50%) from deep while hitting four of her five three-throw attempts. She added eight rebounds, four steals, and an assist to stuff the stat sheet. Both Alexa Dufries (15 points) and Rachel Guinn (10 points) finished with double-digit point totals in the triumph.

Rivier remains on home court for another GNAC clash on Tuesday, Jan. 30 as they face off against Saint Joseph’s (Maine) at 5 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

JWU 53, RIVIER 47

The Raiders fell after the game was tied at the half, and are now 12-7 overall but 4-5 in the GNAC.

Nick Pignone led Riv with 12 points while Devin Owens had 10 points. Riv hosts Saint Joseph’s of Maine at 5 p.m. at the Muldoon.

MEN’S HOCKEY

ALBERTUS MAGNUS 6, RIVIER 3

The Raiders grabbed a 3-1 lead in the first period at Conway Arena but were blanked the rest of the way, falling to 9-9-2.

Avery Arnold, Jack Tos and Shawn Golden scored for the Raiders, while assists on the day went to Tos, Carter Poulin, Nick Paolucci, Damon Kiyawasew, Liam Hennessy and Tyler Sitnikov.

Luke Newell had 36 saves in goal for the Raiders, who are at Albertus on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

RIVIER 1, MCLI 0

With just 1:15 left in overtime, Caeli Reed recorded the game-winning goal at Peter W. Foote Vietnam Veterans Memorial Skating Rink in North Adams, Mass. to sweep the weekend home-and-home series. This goal marked Reed’s first collegiate tally.

The Raiders are now 7-8-3 overall and 2-2-2 in Eastern Collegiate Hockey Alliance (ECHA) action with MCLA falling to 4-14 on the season and remaining winless in ECHA play. Rivier outshot their hosts, 50-24.

Rachel Hinkley made 24 saves for Riv, earning her second career shutout and second in as many starts.

Rivier will head to the Worcester Ice Center on Friday to face Worcester St. in an ECHA matchup with a puck drop of 7:10 p.m.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

SPRINGFIELD 3, RIVIER 0

The Raiders (1-3) fell to national power Springfieled by set scores of 25-19, 27-25, 25-20 despite nine kills from Ryan Peace and eight by Sokunbuth Ly.

Neal Rea had 22 assists for Riv, while Sokunbuth added six digs.

Riv faces MIT next on Thursday.
