The Boston Red Sox have parted ways with lefthander Chris Sale.

The Sox on Saturday dealt the veteran starting pitcher to the Atlanta Braves for highly regarded infield prospect Vaughn Grissom.

The Red Sox will also pay $17 million of Sale’s $27.5 million for the 2024 season.

Sale, 34, was once considered one of the best pitchers in baseball but injuries have curtailed his career. He was 6-5, 4.30 last year, and in six seasons with Boston, he was 46-30, 3.27, a two-time All-Star (2017, 2018) and helped the Red Sox win the 2018 World Series.

Overall he has a career mark of 120-80, 3.10 in 13 seasons, and is a seven-time All-Star. Sale reportedly waived his no-trade clause to allow the deal to take place.

Grissom, 22, was selected by the Braves in the 2019 First-Year Player Draft in the 11th round. In 64 games at the Major League level, he has a slash line of .287/.339/.407.

The deal comes a day after the Red Sox reached agreement with a free agent starter, Lucas Giolito, on a two-year deal.
