Silver Knights Notes: Wolff feels back home at Holman

NASHUA – It’s hard to believe that Kyle Wolff hadn’t been playing baseball for the last month or so.

So the solution was simple: Why not return to the Nashua Silver Knights?

Wolff, it seems, was caught up in the coaching upheaval at Boston College when longtime head coach Mike Gambino surprisingly bolted for Penn State despite getting a reported contract extension at B.C. Wolff was supposed to play at first in the Cape Cod League, and then the New England Collegiate Baseball League at North Adams, Mass. but neither panned out. And with Gambino leaving, there was really no Plan B.

So he went to Plan SK, as in Silver Knights.

“I couldn’t find a place to play, finally talked with Nashua, and I’m back,” said Wolff, the hero from last year’s championship with his deciding game-winning homer. “It was kind of a mutual thing. I got a contact, talked with Cam, I said ‘Love it.’ I had to talk with my B.C. Coaches, and next thing you know, I’m here.”

He made an immediate impact last Friday hitting fifth as a DH and reaching base three times. At 12-27, Nashua is 11 games out of the fourth and final playoff spot with just 25 games to go, so barring a complete collapse by one team and incredible surge by the Knights that Wolff can have a season-saving impact, but he does make Nashua’s lineup better, for sure.

“He just wants to get some games in,” Nashua manager Kyle Jackson said. “It just helps the lineup. He has great at-bats, but to just have a righty in there … He did well.”

Of course Wolff will always have a special place in Silver Knights lore with his two-run shot in the top of the ninth in the deciding Game 3 vs. Vermont just over 11 months ago.

How often does he think about that moment?

“I don’t know, people bring it up to me, but I try not to think about that moment,” he said, referring to the respect he has for the Vermont reliever who surrendered it, Wyatt Cameron. “Obviously, we got a ring out of it. … I got texts every now and then from Cam, or KJax, it was definitely a very cool moment. But now we’re moving on, a new year.”

Still, it felt great to be back at Holman. “It was electric,” Wolff said. “Saw some old teammates like Gitsch (Zach Gitschier), Welchie (George Welch), Kyle Lavigne, Jack McDermott. Jack’s one of my best friends on my team. … he’s the reason why we won the championship last year. Everyone says the home run, but look what he did in the playoffs; he hit a double right before my home run.”

And was named Finals MVP. But he’s thrilled to have Wolff back.

“It’s like a breath of fresh energy,” McDermott said. “Even though he’s young, he’s a leader because of just how he plays. Great dude, too, just a boost in the locker room.”

Wolff is surprised at Nashua’s record, because the team he returned to “brings so much energy, you would think they’re in first place. … I think with just that, and the loosness we play with, it brings energy to everyone, it’s contagious.”

At Boston College, Wolff played in 20 games, starting 11, hitting .220 (9 for 41) with a couple of homers and four RBIs. Typical Division I freshman stats.

With Gambino gone, things remain to be seen, but he loved his first-year experience.

“I love B.C.,” Wolff said. “We had a great year, our best year, the guys are great, we went to some really cool places, playing against some great teams, playing with some of my best friends. We unfortunately lost in the regional finals to Alabama, but it was an unbelievable experience. I had a blast.”

He hopes to have the same for just a little less than another month.

JACKSON’S 100TH

In case you missed it, that win by Nashua over Vermont on Friday was Jackson’s 100th career victory at the helm of the Silver Knights. Likely counted in there were numerous wins as interim manager when former skipper B.J. Neverett couldn’t be there for job or other reasons, usually at least a couple of times a year.

HIGHER EDUCATION, ETC.

Wednesday night’s game vs. Pittsfield is “Higher Education Night” in which admissions counselors from several colleges in the region will be at the ballpark to provide information to prospective students. Also, anyone with a college student ID will get in free. The team has posted on its Facebook page a list of nearly 30 schools that will be represented, including Nashua’s Rivier University and Nashua Community College…

This is Week One of the Silver Knights’ annual Baseball Camp. The soggy weather Monday had the young campers according to a social media photo or two, working out at an indoor hitting facility…

Vermont is due in again today for a 6 p.m. game., one of just two games at Holman this week. In fact, after Wednesday’s game with Pittsfield, there will be just six home games left for the season. Goes by quick, doesn’t it?…

Nashua has vaulted into third in league attendance, jumping ahead of New Britain by 45 fans per game, averaging 1,547 over 21 openings.
