STANDISH, Me. — Another Rivier University womaen’s basketball season ends at Saint Joseph’s College.
The Monks seem to always thwart the Raiders, and they did it again on Wednesday night in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference quarterfinals with an 88-70 win, snapping Rivier’s (14-12) eight-game win streak and ending the Raiders season.
Hollis Brookline alum Cassandra Stapelfeld had 24 points and seven rebounds to lead the 21-4 Monks into the semis.
The second quarter did the Raiders in. Rivier held the lead after one quarter of play due to the nation’s leading scorer, Lyric Grumblatt, going off for 12 of the team’s 21 points. However, the Monks would bounce back in the second and go on a huge 34-10 run to take a 21-point lead into the break.
The second half was very competitive, with the Raiders outscoring the Monks 39-to-36. Unfortunately, the second quarter lead gave St. Joe’s all the cushion they needed to come out on top.
SJC had four athletes finish with 15 points or more. Jayne Howe tallied 17 points, Grace Philippon had 15, Kaleigh Walsh also added 15 points.
Grumblatt scored a game high 27 points to go with four rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.
Bishop Guertin alum Hannah Muchemore of Nashua had 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists for the Raiders, who have 12 of the 14 players on the roster eligible to return.
