Several locals survive cut to make State Am field of 64

They Marched at North Conway Country Club on Tuesday.
And one local is glad they did.
Paul Torri of Nashua’s Sky Meadow Country Club was one of 11 golfers tied at six over 148, with only six spots available to round out the field of 64 for match play in the 118th New Hampshire State Amateur Championship.
Torri survived along with five others, and match play begins today.
Ryan Quinn of Sagamore-Hampton Golf Club was the medalist with a 66 Tuesday that gave him a minus-6. Defending champion James Pleat of Nashua Country Club shot an even par 71 yesterday to wind up two under for the two days, tied for seventh.
Monday’s leader, Peter Lown, cooled off significantly, shooting a 76 after his 64 on the first day and was tied for 12th.
The top locals finished in a three-way tie for fourth at four under 138: s Amherst Country Club’s Colin McCaigue, Sky Meadow’s Brandon Gillis and Passaconaway’s John Devito, the 2019 champion. Right behind them were Pleat and fellow Nashuan Tommy Ethier (also NCC) in a five-way tie for seventh.
Jack Brown of NCC was in a three way tie for 12th at a two-under 140, followed by NCC’s Bryce Zimmerman in a tie for 15th at one-under.
Meanwhile, James Pleat’s father, three-time State Am champ Phil Pleat of NCC did not make the cut with his 74-75 giving him a seven-over two day total of 149, missing The March by one shot.
The remaining local qualifiers are Jack Kelley (Sky Meadow, tied for 36th), Austin Baker (NCC, tied for 36th), Ryan Friel (Overlook, tied for 42nd), Jon Dyer (NCC, tied for 42nd), and, of course Torri.
TODAY’S TOP MATCHES
Defending champ James Pleat will take on No. 54 Stephen Miele of Laconia Country Club today. Devito, seeded sixth, will take on Torri in an all-local match. Seventh seed Ethier will face No. 58 Spenser Stevens of The Maplewood Country Club.
Last year’s runnerup, Windham CC’s and Bishop Guertin alum Cam Sheedy (No. 31) will face No. 34 Will Ducharme of The Golf Club of New England. Zimmerman (No. 16) will face No. 49 Jeremy Duhamel of Manchester CC. McCaigue at No. 4 takes on Patrick Hesseltine of Laconia CC. Gillis at No. 5 will face No. 60 Hunter Duncan of Concord CC. Brown at No. 12 will face No. 53 Nick Tufts of Candia Woods.
