HS Roundup: South nine bows in opener; Saber tennis sweeps Alvirne

The full local high school spring sports season hit Day 3 and the Nashua South baseball team finally joined the party, but lost a heartbreaker on the road. But the Hollis Brookline nine was on fire; in lacrosse a tough OT loss for South. Plus Souhegan took two tennis matches from Alvirne.

BASEBALL

EXETER 1, NASHUA SOUTH 0

The Panthers hit the road to Exeter to open up the season and came home with a tough loss. Playing well in the loss were Max Demers (single, double), Nik Levine (hit), Jacoby Cassie (two singles) and Garrett Schmidt (hit).

Brendon Doughty pitched six and one-third innings scattering five hits and striking out four. South hosts Dover on Thursday.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 15, KENNETT 2

The Cavs were unstoppable at the plate racking up 10 hits in their win on the road. Leading the offense unit were Renzo Bergskaug (three hits, two runs), Matthew Howie (two runs), Quinn Imbrogno (two runs), Connor Gryniewicz (two runs) and Matt Bergin (two hits). Myers, Bergin, Jordan Morelli and Marco Bergskaug each stole multiple bases as HB stole 14 overall.

Howie earned the win allowing two hits and two runs over four innings, while striking out seven. HB visits Merrimack Valley on Friday.

CONCORD 9, ALVIRNE 7

The Broncos fall to Concord after a five run fourth inning. Jameson Krueger recorded three hits, a run and a RBI and Memphis Beach tallied two hits, two runs and two RBIs.

Brody Buja pitched four innings allowing nine hits and seven runs (two earned). Others playing well were Brady Mitchell (run, RBI), PJ Millette (hit, run), Matt Bebris (hit, run), Luke Norse (hit, run), Alex Drown (hit, two RBIs) and Jasper Workman (hit, RBI).

Alvirne visits Trinity on Friday.

PELHAM 7, MILFORD 2

The Spartans start the new season with a loss to the Pythons. Jacob Hill had a hit and a RBI and Gabe St. Onge added two hits. Jack Bonafilia, Cooper Pare and Guilford Mack all got their first varsity hits. Milford hosts St. Thomas on Friday.

CAMPBELL 11, STEVENS 0

The Cougars used a balance offensive attack and strong pitching to shutout Stevens on the road. The bottom of the lineup sparked the offense as Tim Currier, Brody Pinciaro and Nate Federico combined for five hits, four runs and four RBIs. Pinciaro led the way with three hits, including two doubles. Brady Marcotte earned the win, allowing four hits over six innings with four strikeouts. Campbell also showed off its speed by stealing 21 bases. Campbell hosts Conant on Friday.

SOFTBALL

PELHAM 10, MILFORD 4

The Spartans came up short in their matchup with the Pythons. Alivia Mazzeo and Haley Harrington (three RBIs) each had two hits. Mazzeo struck out five and gave up four unearned runs. Milford visits Kennett on Friday.

BOYS LACROSSE

WINDHAM 12, NASHUA SOUTH 11 (OT)

The Panthers took a tough loss in extra time in the battle of the Cats. Owen Roy (five goals), Max Signoroni (three goals), Grant Imbeault (two goals, three assists), Tyler Benzekri (goal, assist), Cody Jackson (four assists) and Joe Kudla (assist) played well for the locals.

South visits Pinkerton on Saturday.

PORTSMOUTH 14, SOUHEGAN 2

The Sabers struggled, managing just a goal and an assist each by Nate Hill and Rob Goodhue. Harrison Towne had eight saves.

PLYMOUTH 12, MILFORD 0

The Spartans were shutout on Wednesday when they faced off against Plymouth. Rocco Bartling made 16 saves. Milford hosts Alvirne on Friday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

NASHUA SOUTH 13, SALEM 4

Carly Benzekri netted five goals and Briley Landsteiner collected three goals and three assists in the Panthers win over the Blue Devils. Wylie Hart (goal, assist), Lexi McGuire (goal, two assists), Isabelle Picano (goal), Gemma Williams (goal) and Molly Mullaney (goal) added to the offense. Nitzann Alkalay, Maddie Langer, Hailey Cote, Karina Santana and Nicole DeJesus Roman led the defense. South visits Concord on Thursday.

BOYS TENNIS

SOUHEGAN 7, ALVIRNE 2

The Sabers captured their first win of the season taking five of six singles.

Winners at Nos. 1 through 4 included Brian Goddard (9-8, 8-6), Parker Schade (8-1), Patrick Bryson (8-2) and Broke Kenner (8-5). Sam Phillips won at No. 6, 8-6.

Souhegan took the first two doubles as well, with Goddard/Schade (8-1) and Bryson/Kenner (8-6).

For Alvirne, Owen Nagle won at No. 5 singles, 8-3, and Nagle/Jeronimo Tamayo won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles. Sam Hergerhahn played tough at No. 1 singles.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 8, PLYMOUTH 1

The Cavaliers roll continues as they swept singles with Arjun Inakollu (8-1), John Torpey (8-1), Samuel Anthony (8-3), Samuel Pistor (8-1), Greyson McSeveney (9-7) and Eli Mazzola (8-2) all winning.

Torpey/Pistor (8-1) and McSeeney/Mazzola (8-5) won in doubles.

BOW 6, MERRIMACK 3

The Tomahawks were swept in doubles after the teams split singles three apiece. Winners for Merrimack included Mikhail Agapov at No. 1 (8-2), Jeremy Nigen at No. 4 and Connor Miner at No. 6, both 9-7.

GIRLS TENNIS

SOUHEGAN 9, ALVIRNE 0

The Sabers zipped by the Broncos, losing just 12 games over nine matches.

Winners included Callie Perrin (8-0), Ori Dart (8-2), Sophia Yates (8-2), Emm Perrin (8-1), Mari Dart (8-1), Eli Brower (8-2). In doubles, it was Callie Perrin/Ori Dart (8-1), Mari Dart/Emm Perrin (8-2) and Yates/Abby Jubin (8-3).

For Alvirne, Ella Proulx, Sam Schiller and Ava Gagna each won more than one game in their singles matches.

PINKERTON 6, NASHUA SOUTH 3

The Panthers dropped four of six in singles to put themselves in a hole. South winners included Piya Choshki at No. 1, 8-4 and Ananya Arun at No. 4, 8-6, plus the doubles team of Chokshi/Riya Shroff (9-8, 7-2).
