Legion update: Coffey Post, Hudson enjoy big weekends

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Jul 12, 2021

NASHUA — Don’t look now, but with a week to go in the American Senior Legion regular season, the Nashua James E. Coffey Post is within a half a game of first place in District B.

And Merrimack is atop the District A standings. Post 98 is now 5-3, neck-in-neck with Keene (6-4), but with plenty of games to play in a short amount of time. But Nashua picked up two huge wins on Saturday, 11-4 over Portsmouth and then 3-0 over Dover. Coffey stands at 9-1, just behind 10-1 Dover. Its next home game is Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. vs. Rochester at Holman Stadium.

And don’t forget about Hudson Post 48, which is 7-5 in District B after sweeping Salem 3-1 and 9-0.

But the wins Saturday for Coffey Post were huge. Padraig Mac Seain had a big day vs. Portsmouth, going 4 for 4, while Jack Bergin drove in five runs with three hits, including a double and two triples. Ryan Bourgeois had a double and two RBIs. Charlie Hale tossed 6.2 innings, allowing eight hits while striking out seven.

Beating Dover 3-0 was even bigger, as Mac Seain and Isaac Zhang combined for the shutout. Mac Seain gave up three hits, striking out six over four innings, while Zhang tossed three innings of hitless ball, fanning four.

Kam Thibault, Jake Mitchell and Luke Kourkoulakos each had a hit and a run scored, while Drew Gryniewicz had a walk and an RBI.

Hudson is slated to visit Portsmouth tonight, weather permitting, while Merrimack is slated for a doubleheader at Keene. Mother Nature, though, may alter those plans.
