JACKSON, N.H. – Freshman Sydney Palmer-Leger of the University of Utah and sophomore Magnus Boee of the University of Colorado made it a clean sweep of individual national championships to wrap up the 2021 NCAA Skiing Championships, hosted by the University of New Hampshire, on Saturday at Jackson XC.

Palmer-Leger won the 15K Nordic freestyle event by more than 24 seconds – finishing in a time of 38 minutes, 31 seconds for her second national title in as many events – to help Utah to its second straight national championship, third in the last four and 13th NCAA Skiing Championship overall.

On Thursday, Palmer-Leger won the women’s 5K classic championship and Boee took the men’s 10K classic event.

The Utes finished with 554 points and Colorado, the team runnerup for the fourth time in the last five championships, compiled 522.5 points. The University of Denver was third with 442 points, Alaska Anchorage was fourth with 411 and Montana finished fifth with 383.5.

Vermont was sixth with 351 points, Northern Michigan was next with 232, Westminster College had 212 points for eighth and of New Hampshire was just a point back in ninth. Alaska Fairbanks was 10th with 163 points.

Boee followed up Thursday’s victory with a triumph in Saturday’s 20K freestyle in a time of 48:02.4, 16 seconds in front of Utah’s Samuel Hendry.

In Saturday’s women’s race, Astrid Stav of Alaska Anchorage finished second and Palmer-Leger’s teammate, Novie McCabe, was third.

Utah dominated the men’s and women’s Nordic classic events on Thursday to open a big lead in the team competition and, led again by Palmer-Leger, also was tops in the women’s freestyle Saturday. Colorado led the way in the men’s freestyle race and Utah was tied with New Mexico and Alaska Anchorage for second place.

The Utes defended their 2019 national title. They led the 2020 championships after two days, but there was no champion determined after the event at Bridger Bowl was called off abruptly and the athletes were sent home because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Utah started its run of three titles in the last four with a victory at the 2017 NCAA Skiing Championships, which were also hosted by the University of New Hampshire at Cannon/Mittersill and Jackson XC.
