UNH will host NCAA Skiing Championships March 10-13

By UNH Athletic Communications - | Mar 2, 2021

DURHAM, N.H.– The University of New Hampshire athletic department announced Monday that it will host the 2021 NCAA Skiing Championships on March 10-13 at Jackson Ski Touring Center and Mittersill at Cannon Mountain.

This will be the sixth time UNH has hosted NCAAs, and the first time since 2017, when the University of Utah won the national championship. Middlebury College, the originally scheduled host school, is not participating in athletics this season.

Alpine events will take place at Cannon Mountain on Wednesday, March 10 and Friday, March 12. Nordic competition at Jackson XC is slated for Thursday, March 11, and Saturday, March 13.

The venues are one hour apart and the NCAA headquarters for the championships will be at the Omni Mount Washington Hotel, next to the Bretton Woods Ski Resort.

“When we heard that Middlebury College could not host as a staff, we decided to look into hosting,” said Cory Schwartz, UNH’s Coordinator of Skiing / Nordic head coach. “We felt it was important for Eastern Skiing (EISA) to keep the championships in the east if possible. We reached out to Cannon and Jackson, and they were excited to bring the best collegiate skiers in the country to New Hampshire. This will be our sixth time hosting, which shows the state and school can provide championship-level races.”

One of the interesting aspects of the championships is that men and women, alpine and Nordic skiers, all compete as one team. The two genders and different skiing disciplines compete in separate races, but for one final score and one final championship.

“We have been working with the UNH administration, Cannon, Jackson and the NCAA to provide a safe week of training and racing,” stated Schwartz. “Personally, this will be my last NCAAs as a host school, so to be able to provide one more NCAA Championship to collegiate skiing is very rewarding, especially during this year dealing with the pandemic.”
