Scharn sharp in Hudson’s 6-0 NEIBL win over Amherst

HUDSON – Adam Scharn isn’t planning on a baseball career at Southern New Hampshire University.

But if someone from the Penmen coaching staff had been at Tuesday’s 6-0 Hudson NEIBL win over Amherst, the SNHU braintrust might be talking to him now about giving it a shot.

Scharn twirled a complete game (seven innings) three-hit shutout, striking out six and walking three. He tossed 96 pitches in his first outing since last summer, but it looked like he had been pitching all spring.

“Basically, it was just the fastball,” the recent Alvirne grad said. “I usually have a curve, but it wasn’t working tonight. It felt great. First time out this year. I love to be on the field.”

And his Hudson teammates loved having him out there.

“Adam is super reliable,” Hudson coach Steve Beals said. “He doesn’t overpower you. … He’s efficient. He throws seven innings, he throws 96 pitches. That’s pretty typical for him.”

Scharn spoiled the opener for Amherst, which had as many as two on in one inning, the third, via walks. They were held to a Dylan Dufour single, a Jeff Lugo double, and a Isaiah Gutierrez single.

“He was excellent,” Amherst coach Tom Walker said. “Our hitters, they went in there, they swung, I don’t think they had a lot of bad at bats. But he was dominant.”

Hudson got three runs in the first off Amherst starter Ryan Humphrey and that was it. One came in on a wild pitch, and Travis Holbrook tripled in a run and scored on a subsequent a throwing error.

Dufour (3 for 3) singled in runs in the second and fourth and Kyle Boulanger homered in the fifth. Hudson, now 3-0, has a group that’s been together while Amherst is drawing from five schools.

“The vast majority of our group have had good chemistry, they’ve played baseball together,” Beals said. “From Hudson Little League, through travel team and their Alvirne days. … We were very competitive last year (in Junior Legion), and all we wanted them to do is keep building on that. … We had a good day.”

Scharn says he may try to walk on at SNHU.

“There are certainly schools that many of them could play at,” Beals said. “I don’t think the end-all for all of them is having to play in college. I think they enjoy being together, enjoy playing the game.”

Especially when a pitcher like Scharn is that sharp.
