Here’s the sporting way to plan out your month of May

By Tom King - Staff Writer | May 3, 2023

It’s almost May already? Didn’t we just get through March?

If you’re behind in things like we are, here’s a chance for you to catch up and plan out your month with a few key May local, regional and national sports dates , a service every couple of months we try to provide. Now there won’t be any Celtics or Bruins second/third round dates here, because they’re obviously not completely set yet as of this writing, but just fill in where applicable:

THURSDAY, MAY 4

It’s Battle of the Bridge Week, and at 4 and 6 p.m. it will be the big North-South boys-girls lacrosse doubleheader at Stellos Stadium. The best of the four teams are the Nashua South girls, who take on North at 4 p.m. and then the boys game follows at 6. Let’s see if there’s a sweep or a split.

FRIDAY, MAY 5

The Battle of the Bridge continues with North-South baseball at Holman Stadium at 7 p.m. Last year’s game was a classic 1-0 affair, and both teams look evenly matched, and now are looking to put any ragged early season play behind them. Should be a good one. Prior to the game, this year’s inductees for the Nashua Hall of Fame will be introduced.

SATURDAY, MAY 6

You can hear the sound of the bugle playing now, as it’s Derby Day. Yes, the first Saturday in May brings us the Kentucky Derby. Florida Derby winner Forte is the odds-on favorite, along with Bluegrass Stakes winner Tapit Trice or our pick, Kingsbarns. And they’re off.

SUNDAY, MAY 7

A huge day for Nashua sports history, as it’s the latest induction ceremony – the first live, in person one in several years – for the Nashua Hall of Fame. Two years ago there was a virtual induction. The ceremony begins at noon at the Nashua Courtyard Mariott and will go to 4 p.m. A lot of work went into this, mainly by Nashua athletic director Lisa Gingras, and it’s clearly a special day.

MONDAY, MAY 8

It’s the rematch of Souhegan-Hollis Brookline baseball at 4:30 p.m. in Amherst, a great local Division II rivalry with the defending champion Cavaliers looking good and the Sabers still working things out as of now. HB took the first meeting 14-7 in the Cavs’ season opener. This one we don’t think will be as high scoring.

TUESDAY, MAY 9

The final chapter of the spring Battle of the Bridge with North vs. South softball at Rivier University’s Raider Diamond under the lights. Both teams are having tough seasons but this is always their night to shine, and it should be a very competitive game. See you there.

FRIDAY, MAY 12

Holman Stadium will be the place with Bishop Guertin vs. Nashua South baseball at 7 p.m. one of our favorite spring matchups. It’s always a highly competitive game, and this should be no exception. South coach James Gaj says he plays for May, and May certainly has the biggest local regular season games.

TUESDAY, MAY 16

The best Bishop Guertin boys lacrosse games are the out-of-state opponent affairs, and a big one will be the Cards’ meeting with St. John’s Prep at 4 p.m. at Stellos Stadium. Sometimes these games get shifted to other venues or in prime time, so double check the schedule as the day approaches. Should be a great one.

THURSDAY-SUNDAY, MAY 18-21

Let’s get some golf into the mix. There wasn’t a lot of Masters drama, perhaps the PGA Championship will provide some? Its at Oak Hill in Rochester, N.Y.. Hopefully it won’t snow. Hey, in that area you never know.

FRIDAY, MAY 19

We don’t want to forget about your Boston Red Sox, who will see an old friend on the west coast on this night as they visit the San Diego Padres and Xander Bogaerts. It’s the first night of a 10-day, nine game road trip that also includes Anaheim and Phoenix. First pitch in San Diego is 9:40 p.m. Whatever Bruins or Celtics playoff game is going on at that time – and there will be one – should be just getting over, so we know you’ll be watching.

SATURDAY, MAY 20

Preakness Day. The second leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown takes place at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md. Watch on TV, because grandstand seats were going for $525-$825. For two minutes? Post time is 6:50 p.m.

MONDAY, MAY 22

Head back to Holman for another all-city game, 7 p.m. with Nashua North taking on Bishop Guertin. Again, these are always the best ones.

TUESDAY-WEDNESDAY MAY 23-24

The NHIAA postseason is upon us with the start of the team tennis tournaments in boys and girls. The boys prelims are Tuesday, the girls Wednesday. An early look now tells us the teams to watch will be the Nashua South boys in Division I, and the Hollis Brookline boys and Souhegan girls in Division II.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 24

A big week continues – it’s Opening Night, albeit on the road, for the Nashua Silver Knights as the 13th Futures Collegiate League Baseball season gets underway. If you don’t mind the drive, then hop in the car and hit the Mass. Pike for a trip to Pittsfield’s Wahconah Park for the 6:35 first pitch vs. the Pittsfield Suns. Yes, Wahconah is still in the same situation it was a year ago, with the grandstand condemned and bleachers set up on the field. There certainly will be renovations down the road.

THURSDAY, MAY 25

Head to Salem High School for some of the best athletes around competing in the NHIAA Division I boys and girls track championships. The Nashua North and South teams seem loaded, it should be a very eventful day and night. The meet is set to begin at 4 p.m. Division II is Friday at 5 p.m. at Oyster River.

SATURDAY, MAY 27

They’re back – your Nashua Silver Knights home opener at 6 p.m. at Holman Stadium vs. the Worcester Bravehearts. Usually the defending FCBL champions will hold their ring ceremony prior to the start of their first home game, but the Knights would rather put it off until their first big Friday night game a week later. Still, it’s a big event as they take the stadium field for the first time since Game 2 of their FCBL Finals vs. Vermont last August.

Also on this night, at same time, the Eagles of the International Soccer Club of Nashua take on Santa Cruz FC out of Lowell, Mass. at 6 at Rivier University. If you’re a soccer fan, it’s a great take.

TUESDAY-WEDNESDAY, MAY 30-31

Right after the holiday, we get right into the bulk of the state high school tournaments, with the girls lacrosse prelims on Tuesday and the softball prelims taking place on Wednesday.

And there’s your month, it will go by fast, rest assured. Enjoy.
