Moses a dandy at Vandy; Holman a busy place once again

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Apr 16, 2023

Here’s some tids and bits to munch on before you rush to get your taxes done, after opting to instead enjoy the summer weather of the late week:

—- With the Pro Days all done, spring football has taken hold at colleges around the country. And it was a great opportunity for one local at a big-time school, as former Bishop Guertin QB Hayden Moses of Hollis is in his second year on the Vanderbilt University roster. Moses got in late in the game, rolled out on his only pass attempt for a 6-yard completion. Sure, it’s not breaking news, but as his father Brian wrote, “Not bad for an undersized kid from New Hampshire.” Just the continuation of a great opportunity.

— It was nice to get back into Holman Stadium this past week for the first time since last August – Game 2 of the FCBL Finals to be exact, during which the Silver Knights rallied to keep their season alive in beating Vermont to force a deciding, winner take all Game 3 for the title. Silver Knights general manager Cam Cook was in his office and glanced out at the pitcher on the mound for Goffstown, righty Will Perkowski.

“He’s going to play first for us this summer,” Cook said. Then he looked at a blazing fastball that could barely be seen, resulting in 12 strikeouts over six innings, and his eyes lit up. “And we should probably have him pitch.”

It’s going to be an interesting spring. Ironically, that game wasn’t even supposed to be at Holman, but Goffstown’s field still wasn’t in playable shape.

— OK spring high school coaches, just a gentle reminder to email or text your game results, win or lose. It always runs the scale of some never do, some do it sometimes, some do it only when they win, some do it all the time. Every media outlet experiences the same thing. But in the end, it’s the best way to highlight your players, and it’s a matter of getting into the habit, and in these eyes should be considered part of the job. Thanks in advance.

—- This weekend is the opener of the Eagles of the International Soccer Club of Nashua, the organization’s pro-level team. Over their five years of existance, they simply haven’t been able to buy a break. For example, they were set to have their home opener Saturday (of this weekend) at Rivier’s Joanne Merrill Field, but a scheduling snafu with the Raider women’s lacrosse team forced the team to move things to Souhegan High School Saturday at 5 p.m.

Go back in time, and their first game ever was at Riv in mid-May of 2018 and it felt like March. The next year they had to play the few home games they had outside the area due to the construction of Riv’s Robinson Pavilion. Then COVID cancelled their next season. Then the United Premier Soccer League decided to shift their season to start a month earlier, and the Eagles opened in February like temperatures the first couple of days of April last year. It gets chilly at Merrill Field, said to be the highest spot in Nashua.

And now the schedule shuffle which evidently came as a surprise to the team early this past week and apparently had president Jared Barbosa scrambling.

If you’re a soccer fan, the level is good, and the Eagles simply need a clear flight path.

— We’re still amazed at the Boston Bruins season, as we’re sure many of you are. The thing is, who in either conference can give them a hard time from what we’ve seen in the Stanley Cup Playoffs? Probably Carolina, a team that always seems to have Boston’s number in the playoffs, but that really is about it.

In the West? Defending champ Colorado? Vegas? It just doesn’t seem likely. Yes, we know all about the Curse of the President’s Trophy, and what happened to a similar 60-plus win team in Tampa a few years ago, but we’re definitely sucked in by the team’s regular season success. Get past Carolina and we don’t see a clear obstacle to that C thing.

—- Scheduling tournaments and sites, etc. is no easy task, but did the NHIAA really have to have the Division I, II and III girls lacrosse championship games at different sites at the same night, same time? Division II is at Stellos, Division I at Exeter, Division III at Laconia, all at 7 p.m. on June 6.

The boys, meanwhile, get a tripleheader on Sunday, June 11 at Exeter’s Bill Ball Stadium, as they did a year ago. Sure, during the week it’s not easy to secure a site for an all-day thing, but at least have I and II at the same spot as a doublheader. Tough one.

— Best of luck to all the local runners who are set to give it a go at Monday’s 127th Boston Marathon. Of course, there are memories galore of the tragic events of the Marathon Bombing 10 years ago, and great stories of unity and strength going forward.
