Watching this Super Bowl couldn’t have been easy, Pats fans

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Feb 13, 2023

Ohhhh brother. And we don’t mean Brotherly Love.

No, this isn’t about the Kelces. It’s about how New England Patriot fans should be really shaking their heads right now.

Yeah, yeah, we know, stop being so negative. We’ve heard that a lot lately.

That’s a bunch of bunk, because if you saw Sunday’s Kansas City 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, you know that the Patriots are light years away from getting anywhere back to where we had known them to be.

Patrick Mahomes and to some extent Jalen Hurts showed us that.

Think back to when Patriots quarterback Mac Jones suffered his high ankle sprain vs. the Ravens in late September. His excruciating look as he was helped down the stairs at Gillette Stadium to the locker room.

Then think of Mahomes and his look of pain late in the first half of Sunday night’s game. Then think of what he did in the second half, as he said that “nothing was going to get me off that field.”.

Think of what Hurts did, even though his shoulder certainly limited his ability to throw a deep ball.

Those maneuvered their teams up and down the field; the NFL is an offensive league and the Chiefs and Eagles fit the category completely. And you know the Patriots did not all season long.

Yeah, oh brother. They’ve got a long way to go. As long as Mahomes is around in the AFC, and of course the kid in Cincinnati and the one in Buffalo, etc., etc., well, you see the problem.

“He’s the MVP,” lovable Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of Mahomes. “You saw that.”

Yep. We all did. And yours truly was so wrong. We figured a gimpy Mahomes would be running for his life the way he did vs. Tampa two years ago, because Philly made the rest of the NFC look silly. Up 10 with Mahomes having to play on that even worse painful ankle?

Please, it’ll be Fly Eagles, Fly.

Instead it was Cry Eagles, Cry.

You can bet the fans in Philly were crying about the late defensive holding call on Eagles corner James Bradberry. Good officials in the NFL are not seen nor heard. The holding was marginal at best, and that’s a case when the only time the official should take the flag out of his pocket is if he has to sneeze. That and seeing players slip-slide away – oh, our old friend George Toma could not have been happy – were the only negatives of this Super Bowl. Yeah, OK, Rihanna’s halftime show could’ve been a little more exciting with a couple of tunes taken out of the playlist and others dropped in, but, you know, there was a family reason she let the weird dancers do their thing.

We’re still wondering how Mahomes did it. Yeah, probably another needle, other than the “We were able to regroup at halftime” thing. The Eagles and their annoying coach Nick Sirianni made a mistake with their talented secondary by going zone. Don’t zone vs. K.C. or you’re in the Mahomes Zone. He’ll pick you apart.

Unfortunately, the same right now can’t be said for Mac Jones. Hope you enjoyed watching the Chiefs in their third Super Bowl since Tom Brady left the Patriots.

They’ll be in quite a few more.

Yeah, oh brother.
