Mark down these February dates as we begin to thaw out
Hopefully, we can all thaw out now after the Friday-Saturday bone chilling temperatures and enjoy what we can during the month of February.
Here are some key dates to remember as the month is already underway. Keep in mind, last year these dates included a few high school championship games, but sanity prevailed and those will be part of March:
WEDNESDAY, FEB. 8
Head over to Hollis Brookline for a great look at wrestling as the Cavs host Bishop Guertin in a dual meet at 7 p.m. They met for the state title two years ago when the pandemic forced the sport to have a dual meet playoff format. They have their rivalry, and last year were making each other the Division II meet favorite before the Cavs ultimately won it.
THURSDAY, FEB. 9
Head over to Merrimack High School to see what should be a great boys hoop game between Bishop Guertin and the Tomahawks. Merrimack coach Austin Denton probably has the best team he’s had in his three seasons of work, and the Cards are a contender. Should be fast paced and fun beginning with a 6:30 p.m. tip. It’s a makeup of an earlier snowed out affair.
SATURDAY, FEB. 11
Everybody into the pool. The state Division I and II high school swim championships will be held at UNH, and while we’ll have some individual champions locall, what are the chances of a team winner? We’ll find out. The gymnastics state meet is this day as well in Salem. The Bruins also return from the long All-Star break, hosting the Washington Capitals.
SUNDAY, FEB. 12
It’s not just Super Bowl Sunday, it’s the first NHIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships held in three years, at Dartmouth College. For a lot of athletes and coaches, it’s been a long wait. But for crying out loud, the NFL moved the Super Bowl one week later than it used to be thanks to the 17-game schedule, and still the track meets collide with it. Like a magnet.
As for the big game, well, we’ll tell you who are pick is that day, Eagles or Chiefs. Oh, and the Celtics have a decent home game at 2 p.m. vs. Memphis.
TUESDAY, FEB. 14
This one snuck up on us, like Valentine’s Day usually does: It’s the start of the Divsion III boys hoop tourney, with the prelims at home of the higher seed. That will likely mean a game for the Campbell Cougars, who suffered a tough tourney ouster in the quarters last year but have vowed to make more noise this time around. Wow, already. The girls prelims are the next night.
And the Celtics have a biggie vs. the Bucks at TD Garden.
WEDNESDAY, FEB. 15
Hope springs eternal: Red Sox pitchers and catchers report in what a few months ago was hurricane ravaged Fort Meyers, Fla. But baseball basically begins today, folks. Full squad reports on Feb. 20.
FRIDAY, FEB. 17
Of course Tuesdays and Fridays are big deals when it comes to high school basketball, but the New Hampshire Division I girls game of the year is this night, with Bishop Guertin visiting Bedford, the two teams having played in the last two state finals and both know one has to beat the other to win the title, but not necessarily during the regular season. It won’t be a battle of unbeatens; Bedford lost 55-53 to Portsmouth on Jan. 24. We’ve seen a couple of different start times for this one, so check with the home Bulldogs that week.
SATURDAY, FEB. 18
Wrestling Day. The NHIAA Division Meets are set, and of local interest, the Division II meet is at Hollis Brookline, while Nashua North and South will be at Londonderry. There will probably be a couple of individual state titles locally from Division I, and in Division II, with BG, HB, Merrimack, Milford, Alvirne and Souhegan, there should be a lot of noise made. Also, for bowling fans, it’s the NHIAA team state title tourney at Strikers East in Raymond.
SUNDAY, FEB. 19
To spice up your holiday weekend, the NBA All-Star game takes place in Salt Lake City – where it was held exactly 30 years ago. There’s some useless knowledge for you.
And, rev up those engines. The Daytona 500, otherwise known as the Super Bowl of racing, is this day as well. Enjoy.
MONDAY, FEB. 20
Happy President’s Day. You could make it a hockey day, with a doubleheader that may be worth taking in.
First, head over to Conway Arena for the Nashua North-Souhegan vs. Nashua South-Pelham rematch. The first game was a classic 2-1 overtime win by the Kings in overtime last month, and the last three games between the two have either gone to OT or been decided in the final seconds of regulation.
Then thaw out for an hour or so and head down to Skate 3 in Tyngsborough, Mass. for Bishop Guertin vs. Concord boys. Concord surprisingly blew away the Cards last month 8-2; it won’t be the same again, we don’t think. Concord’s the clear-cut favorite in Division I (unbeaten as of this writing) but Guertin may be the main challenger. It’s late 7:55 p.m. start but worth a look.
TUESDAY, FEB. 21
If you’re not still frozen, then head over to Hudson’s Cyclones Arena for the Bishop Guertin girls vs. Concord. The Cards have one loss as of this writing while the Tide were working on a seven-game winning streak. Two of the contenders for the state title, for certain. You’ll want to see BG standout Jenna Lynch before the entire season comes to a close.
After that, head over to Rivier University, if the Raiders women’s hoop team finishes high enough in the GNAC standings to host a first-round conference tourney game. It’s possible.
FRIDAY, FEB. 24
The Red Sox have their first spring training game, vs. Northeastern University, of course. We’ll see if any Silver Knights are playing in this one. The Sox play the Braves the next day.
SATURDAY, FEB. 25
The Division III boys hoop finals are set for this night at Keene State College at 8 p.m. Will Campbell be there? We’ll see.
TUESDAY, FEB. 28
We end the month with the start of the Division I and II girls basketball tournaments with their preliminary rounds. Can Nashua South get in this group? Merrimack? We’ll more than likely see Milford and Hollis Brookline playing on this night, hopefully at home.
And you thought February was a dull month.
