Better coaching is great, Pats, but don’t forget the players

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Jan 21, 2023

The savior was in Foxborough the other day.

Did you hear? Perhaps we’ll have a new holiday named after him. Bill O’Brien Day. Billmas. What are you doing Billmas Eve next year?

The guess here is that the Patriots will hire O’Brien, and if they’re smart grab Adrian Klem as their offensive line coach and perhaps even Shawn Jefferson as their wide receivers coach, giving both some fancy titles to allow them to make more than a lateral move from their current teams.

But can New England hire O’Brien and get it over with? Who thought that the former head coach of the Houston Texans is the most sought after coach in Patriots history – as an assistant?

There’s no one more roasted in the NFL by fans than offensive coordinators. That made the joke of what Bill Belichick did this past year even worse. And just look how many coordinators around the league are getting whacked.

Sure a new offense would help the Patriots. It’s difficult, certainly, for the organization and its fans to be watching this weekend’s Division Round on their TVs rather than in person, which has been the case for the fourth straight season. Yep, four straight years not in the final eight, two years ousted in the Wild Card round and two years missing the playoffs entirely.

Better players would help.

Listening to media and prognisticators outthink themselves regarding this weekend’s games, you really wonder what the heck they are doing.

With one exception, it looks pretty simple:

CHIEFS 30, JAGUARS 14

Everyone is fooled by what Trevor Lawrence & Co. did in last week’s matchup with the Chargers, who are built not to hold big leads because they rarely run the ball.

The Chiefs are good, people, and the Jaguars are 10-8. They have arguably the best quarterback in the game today, and that’s enough for us. The only question is whether they’ll be Atlanta bound or get to play next weekend at home.

BENGALS 33, BILLS 30

They finally get to play, and it sure looked in the abbreviated first, ill-fated meeting that the Bengals had the Bills’ number, didn’t it? Cincinnati has played great football lately, and sure, the Bengals are lucky in a way thanks to a silly goal line call by the Ravens last Sunday night. Burrow will try to expose an injury riddled Buffalo secondary. Really, after everything the Bills have been through, it just seems like at some point they’ll be too mentally and physically – Josh Allen included – exhausted to keep going. AFC title game rematch in K.C.

EAGLES 33, GIANTS 13

Yes, we know, the G-Men didn’t fold up like we thought might happen last week vs. the Vikes. Great job by Daniel Jones, whom the New York media feels is now the greatest of all time. Well, close. And they forget how easily Eagles QB Jalen Hurts picked Big Blue’s secondary apart in early December. Or how the Eagles defensively dominated the line of scrimmage and made life hell for Jones. Sorry, this one isn’t going to be even close.

NINERS 27, COWBOYS 16

The best two teams in the NFC all season have been the 49ers and the Eagles. Brock Purdy has yet to lose a game as San Francisco’s starting QB, which makes this year’s Mr. Irrelevant extremely relevant. The Niners have perhaps the best defense in the NFL – you think Dak Prescott isn’t going to throw the ball to the team in red and gold? Guess again. Niners will move on and we feel they are a Super Bowl team again. And can win it.

LAST WEEK: 5-1

PLAYOFFS: 5-1

REGULAR SEASON: 71-54
