OCT. 29, 1952 – “Eddie Anderson, head coach of the Holy Cross football team, was an interested spectator at the Nashua High-Manchester Central clash at Manchester clash last Sunday and saw the Purple Panthers drub the Green and White 26-7.
“The primary purpose of the Crusader coach’s visit, it is believed, was to scout around for some new talent and particularly take a look at Peter Prince, quarterbacking for the local 11. It is understood that Peter is contemplating entering the Worcester college next fall, if all goes well.”
OCT. 30, 1962 – “A formidable defense, coupled with sparking first-half offense, gave Alvirne High a 2-0 soccer victory over Conant at East Jaffrey yesterday to keep the Broncos in the running for a state tournament berth. The victory was the fourth straight for the Hudson team and it has one game remaining – today at Peterborough.
“In yesterday’s win, Alvirne broke the scoring ice on Ray Barrett’s left-footed boot after a nice pass from Don Walsh. It scored the second goal in the second period when senior wing-man John Moody drilled it past the Conant goalie on a pass from Paul Bourbeau.”
OCT. 31, 1972 – “Jack Zyla, a former University of New Hampshire basketball captain had been appointed head basketball coach at Milford High School according to Roland Hardwick, Milford athletic director.
“Zyla, who most recently coached the St. Marie of Manchester hoop team, was appointed to the position for one year. Salary arrangements were not disclosed. Zyla will replace former Milford hoop coach Maurice Facques, who will coach the Nashua High team this season while continuing to teach at Milford High.”
NOV. 1, 1982 – “Kirk Lewis of Alvirne High School burned up the Derryfield Park course to win the Class L cross country championship Saturday, finishing in 16 minutes, 52 seconds. However, Lewis didn’t have much support as his Bronco teammates finished far behind.
“Keene won the meet with 85 points, beating out Concord (minus two of its top runners) at 88, and Bishop Guertin with 95. Pinkerton rounded out the top four with 103. Nashua finished a disappointing seventh.
“Guertin was led by a pair of seniors who’ve topped the team all year, Gary Goyette and Mike McGrath, at third and fourth. … Rounding out the local entrants in the top 20 were Milford’s Greg Bosworth at 15th and Guertin’s Tim Tetreault at 20th. Nashua’s best finisher was Scott Hatch at 24th.”
NOV. 3, 1992 – “Two Nashua High School players were named to to the Class L/I All-Tournament Volleyball Team by the New Hampshire Volleyball Coaches Association.
“Aimee Hanson and Amy Hinton were joined on the team by Kerri Camuso and Beth Cullinane of champion Salem, Stefany Shaheen and Sara Wiedhaas of runner-up Oyster River of Durham, and Beth Cullinane of Exeter.”
NOV. 4, 1967 – “The Nashua High Purple Panthers were scheduled to take the field today at 1:30 p.m. in quest of their fourth win of the 1967 grid season against the Haverhill High Hillies. Nashua will aim to bounce back after being upset last week by the Manchester Memorial Crusaders.
“Coach Buzz Harvey was expected to go with Dave Foran at quarterback, John Demers at fullback and Bob Kilbane and Pete Gray at the halfback slots.”
NOV. 5, 1977 – “A spectacular passing performance by Panther quarterback B.J. Neverett and exciting running from John Cote led the Nashua High Panthers to a 37-6 win over Weaver last night at Holman Stadium.
“… Neverett was sharp with his passes, completing seven of nine for 77 yards and two Panther scores. Cote ran for 106 yards on just carries, including a 65-yard run.”
