SPRING WHERE ARE YOU? Some tids and bits to hold you over until it comes

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Apr 8, 2026

Let’s forget about that ugly white stuff we saw Tuesday morning, or today’s cold temps. It’s time to catch Spring Fever, so we’ve got some tids and bits to throw on the grill:

— First, what a great thing for Nashua to be getting the FCBL All-Star Game this summer, the third time the league’s big game will be at Holman Stadium.

Not only that, what a great job to get former Red Sox World Series standout Jonny Gomes for the Home Run Derby as the wheels have already been turning in Silver Knights general manger Cam Cook’s mind. Many may forget that Nashua had the honor of hosting the first-ever FCBL All-Star Game. It featured a media/celebrity hitting contest with the guest pitcher being none other than the new Lowell Spinners co-owner Mark Deschenes. Yours truly went 0 for 10, and managed to bet bat on ball just once, a weak foul. We swear Deschenes was throwing this scribe cutters, and everybody else softballs. Karma will come at some point.

—- An FYI, Bishop Guertin’s date with the Nashua Planning Board to get approval for its planned rectangular field on part of the school’s Elliott Field Complex has been changed to May 7. It was originally set for this past Thursday, April 2. School officials likely aren’t adverse to the change, giving them even more time to get everything in order, or refined, not that the school wasn’t already prepared. Again, two things to remember: One, this is different than the project at Groton Road, as that will include tennis courts, and a few practice fields for JV games, but will cost between $20-25 million via fundraising and land is being cleared for. Two, the city is not abandoning playing at Stellos Stadium, they’ll play football there and some other games they feel will draw big crowds. In fact, their agreement with the city goes through 2031, and the school has begun “discussions to update and extend our existing agreement based on the recent renovations,” BG principal Jason Strniste said.

—– The Rivier University men’s lacrosse team got a dose of good competition this past Saturday when it needed to pull out an OT win 11-10 oer Norich. It was a stark contrast from what they’d done for so many games this season, when if they didn’t score in the 20s, it’s a surprise. If a team scores more than single digits, it’s a surprise. In the last five games going into the Norwich game, the Raiders have outscored the opposition by a whopping 107-11. Yes, you are reading correctly. What’s the deal? Well, first of all, head coach Jay Delanoy has built a program of high standards; good players went to play for Riv, defending GNAC champion. But also, the GNAC is not that strong compared to what the Raiders have built. In that five game span, it’s no coincidence the most competitive game was a 10-5 win over Lasell in a rematch of last year’s conference title bout. Now we know who the competition is. Stay tuned to see how this goes over the next three weeks.

—- Sorry, not a fan of ABS. Some of the pitches that have been changed were off by an inch or less. Really MLB? It’s entertaining, for sure, but there’s just too many calls challenged early in the game. So, we’ll compromise. Each team gets to challenge once after six innings. You win, great. There’s your challenge. You lose? Oh well, there’s your challenge. Enough of this endless string of challenges.

—- Local girls hockey players got a treat recently at Conway Arena when the Boston Fleet’s Loren Gabel helped out at Conway Arena’s Little Bruins Girls Clinic. That’s a great thing for these kids to get to experience, because professional women’s hockey is often being played 20 minutes down the road at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass. with the Fleet of the PWHL, now in its third year. Check them out.

—- It’s open season on who the New England Patriots will draft, especially at No. 31. No fans, there will be no trade for A.J. Brown before June 1 because his dead cap hit would be somewhere around $46 million if he’s dealt before then. If we had to guess, we’d say the Patriots will take a defensive player if there’s one they like at that spot. After Tuesday’s dealing away Marte Mapu leaves them lacking depth at linebacker. Or they very well could look for an edge rusher. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel’s words on edge rusher Harold Landry’s knee rehab last week at the NFL Owners Meetings weren’t exactly a ringing endorsement.

But we’ll give spring a ringing endorsement. Supposedly it’s weather is finally getting here Thursday.
