OCT. 22, 1962 – “It took Nashua High’s football machine a period and three-quarters to get rolling, but once it did, it gained momentum enough to crush the Little Green of Central 31-8 yesterday afternoon at Manchester’s Athletic Field.

“A disappointing gathering of an estimated 2,500 watched the action. It watched some fancy ball handling by quarterbacks Greg Landry, a junior, and Moe Lavoie, a freshman; some superb forward passing by Landry; some brilliant catches by ends Curt Goodwin and Joe Adamonis; and some sparkling running by halfback John Newman.”

That a crowd of 2,500 is considered disappointing speaks volumes of then versus now.

OCT. 23, 1982 – “Bishop Guertin High School’s task was clear in order to qualify for its first Class AA soccer tournament: beat Trinity High School on Friday. “There was no margin for a tie with the Pioneers and certainly none with a loss. It was win or be done, and win was exactly what the Cardinals did, 2-1.

“… Despite numerous exceptional opportunities for Guertin, which dominated play. The score was still tied inside the final four minutes. Finally, a trip gave Guertin a free kick outside the penalty area. … Midfielder Joe Bellavance stepped up to the ball and simply flipped it over.

“In rushed Steve Hogan, the area’s fourth-leading scorer. Never has the red-haired ace scored a more important goal. He poked the ball past goalie Jim Woodlock for his eighth of the season.”

OCT. 24, 1987 – “The Milford Area Senior High School girls soccer team primed itself for the start of the Class L tournament next week by winning its last three games by a combined score of 15-1, including yesterday’s 4-0 win over Trinity.

“Barb Cassidy opened the scoring with a unassisted goal midway through the first quarter. Early in the third quarter Stephanie Ulicny scored with Jen Holder assisting. Holder and Ulicny added fourth-quarter goals, with assists to Cheryl Reed and Cassidy.”

OCT. 25, 1977 – “Frank Allen of Hudson won the first-place trophy awarded by the Hudson Table Tennis Club at the Smith Webster school annex in Hudson.

“Allen defeated Bud Whitney of Nashua in the handicap-style tournament. Allen dropped his handicap to 10 and Whitney dropped his to 14 by placing second.

“There was a three-way tie for third place including Stanley Kuzia Jr. of Manchester, Ross Wozniak of Nashua and Tod Whitney of Nashua.”

OCT. 26, 1972 – “The Nashua Boys Club football team handed a tough Manchester North team a stinging loss by the score of 14-8.

“The scoring all came in the first half. In the first quarter, the Boys Club started a scoring drive from their own 46. quarterback Tom Bouchard capped the drive by scoring on a quarterback sneak. The point-after attempt failed.

“The Club wasted no time in scoring again. After a pass interception by Frank Moriarty and his return to the 24, Bouchard went to the air and found Mike Cote in the end zone. Bouchard connected with Mike Levesque for the two-point conversion.”

OCT. 27, 1952- “The Nashua Royals were knocked out of first place in the Lynn Harvest Hockey League on Saturday night by a fast-skating MIT sextet that outplayed the locals 5-1.

“Tom Wells with a pair of unassisted goals and an assist led the winners’ attack while Leo Ravenelle and Bob Dionne looked best for the losers.”

OCT. 28, 1992 – “The Nashua High School volleyball team avoided temptation and took care of business Tuesday night at Belanger Gym.

“The third seeded Panthers properly relegated all thoughts about Salem to the back of their minds until after disposing of stubborn Somersworth 15-5, 15-7, in the Class L/I quarterfinals.

“… Laura Ternan and Aimee Hanson repeatedly stuffed Somersworth’s chances at the net, disrupting the sixth-seeded Hilltoppers’ offense.”
