Clearly, in keeping with his reputation, Buzz Harvey played no favorites in leading the Nashua High football team.

OCT. 8, 1947 – After watching the Nashua High junior varsity team tangle with the St. Joseph, the varsity players began their practice. “Looming big as a mountain in his uniform was Buddy Harvey, back in action after being ordered to quit the squad at the start of the season for his health’s sake.

“Buddy, 15 pounds lighter and in near-perfect condition, went through a rigorous workout at the tackling dummy and later at the blocking session for the linemen as line coach Tony Marandos spent plenty of time polishing up the giant youngster who is expected to make a tremendous difference in the Purple front wall next Sunday.”

OCT. 9, 1962 – “After suffering through two straight defeats and two postponements, the well-rested Alvirne High soccer team rebounded in fine fashion yesterday afternoon by defeating Conant of East Jaffrey 3-1 at Memorial Field in Hudson.

“… In the impressive victory, Alvirne opened the scoring midway in the first period when Ray Barrett hit the net after a fine pass from wingman Mitch Dane. Late in the second period Paul Bourbeau, left inside for the Broncos, also made a beautiful shot from about 20 feet out. … Early in the fourth period senior Peter Burgess drove in a penalty kick to wrap up the scoring.”

OCT 10, 1977 – “Undefeated football teams stay that way with good defense and no one knows it better than Milford High school. Despite being limited to 126 yards offense by an inspired Timberlane club Saturday, the Spartans still managed a 15-6 win because their defense was even more dominant than the Owls’.

“… The defense began by recovering a fumble at the Timberlane 38 and the offense promptly took it in, with Sam DePoy eventually scoring from the 1.

“Later in the initial period, middle linebacker Dwayne Dadoly scooped up a deflected Owl punt and returned it to the Timberlane 23. Two plays later, quarterback Jay Sugar arced a pass into the end zone and flanker Pat Conran, went up a la Darryl Stingley and made a fine leaping catch for the

touchdown.”

OCT. 11, 1987 – “The Bishop Guertin High School practiced the play all wee; 50 miles away in Hampton, Winnacunet prepared to defend it.

“Cardinal receiver Zach Sampson lines up on the left and runs a quick square out. Quarterback Tom Milanette pump-fakes as Sampson turns to break down the sideline, then lofts a long, lead pass, giving his receiver time to run under it.

“… It worked to perfection for the Cardinals with 2:46 left in the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon, providing the winning margin in a 14-10 victory/”

OCT. 12, 2017 – “Seniors Sam Smythe, Guilherme Alves (penalty kick) and Todd Redman all scored on Senior Night as Nashua North topped Bishop Guertin, 3-1, in boys soccer. It was won Titans’ second straight, improving them to 5-7-1 on the year.

“Jimmy Gutierrez and Jack Gould had North’s assists, while Will Brooks had four saves.”

OCT. 13, 1967 – “The Nashua High Purple Harriers won their first meet of the season yesterday afternoon by tripping the Laconia High Sachems, 21-38. It was the third straight first-place finish for Steve Longfellow, who clocked in a time of 12:45, 17 seconds better than second-place Bruce Malkorski of Laconia.

“Steve Urban out-sprinted Jim Proko for third place by a foot, giving the Purple a third and fourth place. … Nashua’s Jim Coughlin, Bob Daniels and Jim Conway were Nashua’s other top finishers, taking sixth, seventh and eighth place.”

OCT. 14, 1982 – “Alvirne High School captured six of the top seven positions in winning a dual cross country meet over Hollis on Wednesday. Beth Dutton of Alvirne won in 19 minutes, 21 seconds.

“Alvirne’s Turney Jenkins was second (19:46), Mary Simmons third (20:25), Sandi Ayers fifth (20:51), Kecia Ellis sixth (21:17) and Jen Gagnon seventh (21:29).

Amy Roberts was the first Cavalier, fourth in 20:36. Martha Petersen was eighth (21:49), Sarah Chorney 10th (21:57), Tammy Ward 11th (22:01) and Buffy Dressler 12th (23:14).
