JULY 1, 1952: From Frank Stawasz’s column:

“Talking American Legion junior baseball brings to mind a recent call from Ray Oban, deposed coach, who pondered at length the possible reasons for his ouster.

” ‘I had a good record (70-18),’ insisted the colorful former pitcher, ‘and all I wish was that they might have let me know about it a lot sooner in order that I might have taken some other coaching job. I love baseball.’

Considering his participation in just about all levels of the city’s baseball programs over the ensuing decades, no one could dispute Oban’s love of the game – and of coaching.

JULY 2, 1962: “Mike Tamulevich posted a 31 to top the field in yesterday’s Best Selected 9-Hole tournament at the Nashua Country Club.

“Runners up at 32 were Danny Degasis, Bill Lochhead Jr. and Bernie Doherty. Net winners: Jim Doherty 32-27; Ray McNamara 32-27; and Bill Robertson 37-27.”

JULY 3, 1972: “The Nashua Coffey Post 3 baseball team defeated Exeter at Holman Stadium last night, 7-0, behind the strong pitching of Bob Keefe and a well-balanced hitting attack.

“… Keefe pitched a strong game, striking out 15 batters while walking only one while allowing just two hits.”

JULY 5, 1977: “The Pepperell Jets scored three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to overcome a 4-1 deficit and defeat the Nashua Dodgers, 7-4, in Fourth of July action.

“… Nashua struck for three first-inning runs off Pepperell starter Lance Johnson. Run-scoring singles by Paul Rousseau and Eric Frazer led the way and Tim Folz scored on an error after contributing a third single. … The Dodgers added a fourth run in the second inning with Dave Hogan walking, stealing second and eventually scoring from third on a passed ball.”

JULY 6, 1992: “Former Nashua High School standout Terry Roy, now an All-American at the the University of Connecticut, won the heptathlon at the United States TAC Junior National Champion ships on Sunday at Jesse Owens Stadium at Ohio State University.

“The 19-year-old Roy, who finished third last year, becomes the top-ranked junior heptathlete in the nation in the nation with the victory. Roy totaled 5,375 points, outdistancing runner-up Catrina Bindell of Wake Forest, who had 5,228 points in the field of 18 competitors.”

JULY 7, 1982: “Paul Lavigne of Milford AREA Senior High has been nominated for the position of head football coach at Manchester Memorial High.

“… Under Lavigne, Milford won four straight championships from 1976-1979. That’s not only a Division II record, but also ties the state record established by Nashua High from 1952-1955.”
