Test your lung capacity by reading aloud this 98-word sentence:

JUNE 3, 1947 – “The Dodgers’ cousins from up the river, the Manchester Giants, invade Holman Stadium tonight and the single contest, which gets started at the new time, 8:15 o’clock, should be a dandy with the second-place Nashua club just 1½ games out of first place, out to move still closer to the Lynn Red Sox at the expense of the Manchester Giants, who have been burning up the circuit during the past 10 days and as a result of their win over Portland last night moved up in the first division, taking over fourth place from the slipping Providence Chiefs.”

For those who are still conscious, congrats.

Maybe there was a post-war punctuation shortage.

JUNE 4, 1962 – “Nashua High has captured the state spring track and field championship for the third straight time and two of its team members set records in the 220-yard dash and the pole vault.

“The Purple’s dash man, Dick Diggins, ran the 220 in 21.7 seconds to beat the old mark of 22.3 seconds and Duane Briggs topped his own pole vault record by leaping 12 feet, ¼ inch to become the first New Hampshire boy to hit the 12-foot mark.”

JUNE 5, 1972 – “Bishop Guertin High School will meet Laconia in the semifinal round of the Class L baseball tournament at Gill Stadium on Wednesday at 4 p.m. following its 4-0 whitewashing of Berlin behind the four-hit pitching of Jim Dobens on Saturday night.

“… Dobens did it again as he displayed pinpoint accuracy by not allowing a walk and surrendering only four hits.”

JUNE 6, 1977 – “Don Richer of Manchester and Ray Zickus of Nashua walked through a record field of 39 men’s doubles entries in defeating Scott Davis of Nashua and John Thomasson of West Lebanon in the finals of the 12th annual Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce doubles tennis tournament. The final score was 6-4, 6-4.

“Laura Bohne of Nashua and Holly Cassidy of Amherst breezed by Dawn Clancy of Hookset and Grail O’Connor of Manchester, 6-1, 6-4, in the women’s doubles finals.”

JUNE 7, 1982 – “It’s called the Meet of Champions because the top track and field athletes from throughout New Hampshire gather to test their own and each other’s abilities.

“One champion stood out among all the rest on a rainy Saturday at Concord’s Memorial Field, and that was Sheri Gagnon of Nashua Senior High.

Gagnon was the only athlete to win four events (three individual, one relay) and if an Outstanding Performer trophy had been awarded, it would certainly have gone to her.”

JUNE 8, 1987 – “Funeral services were held this morning for Charles W. ‘Buzz’ Harvey, who died Friday at Falmouth Hospital in North Falmouth, Mass., after a long illness.

“Harvey, 75, was the Nashua High School football coach from 1941 to 1968 and was the Purple Panthers’ baseball coach from 1948 through 1968. He was athletic director from 1947 to 1977, his last year at the school.

“Harvey won 11 state football championships and four state baseball crowns during his tenure.”

JUNE 9, 2017 – “Milford High School softball coach Jim Rines has always referred to pitcher Delaney Parker as Houdini. Thursday night we all found out why.

“That’s because Parker managed time and time again to wiggle her way out of trouble as the Spartans hung on for a 5-4 Division II semifinal win over arch-rival Souhegan at Southern New Hampshire University.”
