No margin for error from humble scribe

Tourney time again.

Wait, didn’t we just enjoy that? No, that was a good while ago, over two months when the local winter season ended when Hollis Brookline-Derryfield fell short in the Division III hockey semis at Plymouth State.

Who knows, we could be headed back up to Plymouth soon for the state softball tourney. Alvirne, Merrimack and Bishop Guertin in Division I, Hollis Brookline in Division II and Campbell in Division III have great chances.

We love this time of year. It can drive sports scribes crazy, because it’s hard to master the art of being in two places at once. But we try. So many teams, so many games, so little time.

Yet it’s a blast. We’ve already started things with tennis and this weekend track and field. Wednesday and Thursday softball, baseball, boys and girls lacrosse get in the mix. Boys volleyball starts Friday.

It’s win or done for everyone.

It’s been a great spring. Some of the games have been tremendous, such as that Pinkerton-Nashua South extra inning baseball contest at Holman in late April, and the Pinkerton-Bishop Guertin girls lacrosse overtime game at Stellos Stadium about 10 days ago.

There have been some solid performances, some surprises, and some struggles. But now the fun really begins, because there are no second chances. You want to see teams like the BG and South baseball teams go deep into the tournament because they’ve got talented teams that deserve the spotlight. You want to see Alvirne softball, which has caught fire, make a run.

And how about Nashua South boys and girls lacrosse, who have had great springs. The Panther boys will likely be the tourney’s third seed and probably will have to face BG in the semis. What a feat it would be for the South girls to get to the Divison I semis, right?

That girls lax tourney should be dynamic. BG actually has some legit competition in Bedford and Pinkerton, and quite possibly Souhegan. You know the old line; it’s why they play the games.

Fasten your seat belts a week from this weekend with Super Saturday, quarterfinals in just about every sport, plus track’s Meet of Champions.

Will we get any local champions? The BG boys lacrosse is a heavy favorite. The Cardinal girls are, but not as heavy. Campbell boys lacrosse. Can Hollis Brookline get back to the finals, likely against Portsmouth? Will the HB baseball team, which has been atop Division II all spring, end up that way? Will we have a local nine or two at the return of the state title game extravaganza at Manchester’s Northeast Delta Dental Stadium?

Be prepared, unfortunately with the cost of gas, to travel. Holman is the site only for the Division I baseball semifinals. Stellos gets the Division II boys lacrosse semis, but does have the Division II girls lacrosse semis and finals.

We’ll have to go to Exeter for boys lacrosse, but if you’re a fan, you get a tripleheader, Divisions I, II and III starting at 2:30 on Sunday, June 12.

So pack the kids into the car, and head to see your favorite team playing in your favorite sport.

Spring may be winding down, but the fun has just begun.
