MAY 20, 1952 – From the desk of then-Telegraph sports editor Frank Stawasz:

“Buzz Harvey’s baseball kiddies passed the halfway mark in their 1952 campaign over the weekend, dropping their second game in nine starts. This second defeat, by a respectable 2-0 margin, was chalked up by Phillips Andover Academy. The first setback, a 5-0 shutout, was engineered by Andover’s twin, Phillips Exeter, 10 days earlier.”

Those Panther losses would have stung an old Exeter townie, who was born six years later.

MAY 21, 1962 – Happier news for Nashua High baseball:

“The bats of Joe Voveris and Greg Landry and the pitching of Dick Salvail were the sparks that Nashua High’s baseball team needed as it exploded for its 10th victory of the season at the expense of Manchester Memorial, 5-4.

“Although Voveris posted a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, it was Landry’s bases-loaded clutch single sixth that drove I two runs and ultimately proved to be the insurance runs Nashua needed to clinch the contest.”

MAY 22, 1967 – “Alvirne got back into the win column here Saturday and ace pitcher Mike Breen received credit for the victory as Alvirne bombed host Pembroke, 12-2.

“Breen was superb in the win as he struck out 14 and walked only one man in the seven-inning game.”

MAY 23, 1977 – ” ‘Anyone can be a success if he has the tools to work with,’ Charles ‘Buzz’ Harvey, Nashua High School director of athletics, said

Saturday night.

“The occasion was a testimonial dinner-dance in his honor at the Nashua Swim and Tennis Club, with more than 700 in attendance. He is retiring next month as a ‘legend,’ and architect of state championship football and baseball teams he has coached. His wife, Dorothy, and he plan to make their home in Falmouth, Mass.”

MAY 24, 1987 – “Several area athletes athletes posted wins at the Hanover Invitational Girls Track Meet on Saturday.

“Nashua sprinter Kris Janosky won the 100 (12.7), Alvirne’s Becky Bloom captured the triple jump (33-9, a meet record) and Merrimack’s Candi Nichols won the high jump (5-4). … Janosky was also second In the long jump and was on the second-place 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams.”

MAY 25, 2017 – “For the second time in five months, a Nashua High School North varsity coach is leaving to take a similar position at Souhegan High School.

“Dan Wyborney has stepped down as the Titans girls soccer coach and is taking the same job at Souhegan. However, Wyborney will remain a teacher at Nashua South and the Panthers’ girls basketball coach, a position he’s also held the last few years.”

MAY 26, 1972 – “Exactly one year ago, Ted Bishop was making plans for his graduation from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in physical education and looking forward to another summer serving as assistant professional at Amherst Country Club.

“Today, Bishop is one of the youngest club professionals in New England. … The pro that Bishop assisted, Jim Burke, left to become a a salesman for a manufacturer of golf products and Bishop was named Amherst’s pro.”
