Time Travel: May 1 start for Nashua High baseball

APRIL 1, 1952 – “The athletic committee of the School Board last night stamped an ‘OK’ on a 16-game baseball schedule and a 10-game football scheduled submitted by athletic director Charles ‘Buzz’ Harvey for approval.
“The baseball scheduled opens May 2 with the first of a pair of games with Laconia. It also home–and-home games with Concord, Bishop Bradley of Manchester, Portsmouth, Fitchburg, Manchester Central and Keith Academy. Also listed are games with the Phillips Academies, Exeter and Andover.
“Football gets a late start in Holman Stadium next fall with the opener, matching Leominster against the Purple under the lights, not scheduled until Sept. 19. … Returning to the Panther schedule this fall are Dover and Bishop Bradley.”
APRIL 2, 1967 – “Goalie Kevin Palanski was awarded the Most Valuable Player award by Paul Joyal in memory of his father at the Nashua High School Purple Blades hockey dinner held at McNulty-Foley.
“Bruins defenseman Bobby Orr was one of the speakers.”
APRIL 3, 1987 – “If you want another example of how success breeds success, consider the cases of Jill Bresnahan and John Hart, a pair of 13-year-olds from Nashua who will represent New Hampshire on Saturday at the New England Regionals of the Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest at Holyoke, Mass.
“Bresnahan is an eighth-grader at Elm Street Junior High and a co-captain of the school’s girls basketball team. And yes, she has fallen under the wing of Elm Street teacher and girls basketball mogul John Fagula.
“… Hart is a next-door neighbor of Nashua’s first family of basketball, the Barrys, and grew up watching Skip (Boston College), Dave (Middlesex Community College ) and Joy (Nashua High School.”
APRIL 4, 1977 – “The Green Hornet Bantam A’s trounced the Westford (Mass.) Bantams 6-1 in Interstate Hockey League competition at Skate 3.
“Brian Burns led the scoring for the Hornets as he scored the hat trick followed by Gary Berube’s two goals.”
APRIL 5, 1982 – “Phil Belanger of Nashua won his second straight New Hampshire Closed AARA Racquetball championship on Sunday at the Manchester Court Club.
“Belanger, head pro at Nashua’s Off the Wall Racquetball Club, whipped Steve Smith of Portsmouth in the Class A finals. 15-6, 15-0. … Scott Bois of Nashua finished third in the Men’s Class B competition, Gay Rosenfeld of Nashua took third in Women’s Class A.”
APRIL 6, 2017 – “Telegraph Winter All Stars included Boys Track Athlete of the Year David Vorbach, junior, Nashua North; Girls Track Athlete of the Year abby Cranney, junior, Souhegan; Boys Skier of the Year Rice Finn. Sophomore, Bishop Guertin; and Girls Skier of the Year Stephanie Menard, junior, Hollis Brookline.”
APRIL 7, 1987 – “Several area basketball players were among those chosen to compete in the 1987 Alhambra Basketball Classic, featuring top high school stars from New Hampshire and Vermont.
“Nashua center Rob Jones and guard Tim Hodsdon are on the boys roster, along with Merrimack forward Mike Murawski, Londonderry swingman Mike Kryger and Milford forward Doug Newbert.
“… The girls team includes Nashua center Celeste Lavoie forward Stephanie Byrd, Londonderry forward Dayna Sonovick and guard Michelle Ayotte, and Merrimack forward Kris Trapp.”
