You know times are good when your high school football wins and there is angst over allowing one touchdown.

Just think what the reaction would have been had Nashua High lost to a school bearing the name of a man universally regarded as one of the worst presidents in United States history.

NOV. 12, 1946 – “Un, un and – uhuh, no more being called unscored upon are the Nashua Harvey Marauders who saw their perfect record besmirched yesterday afternoon while they were in the process of crushing a high-powered Warren Harding 11, 39-7, before a holiday crowd of 10,000 who braved threatening skies to sit in on the proceedings.

“… Visiting scribes were all raves for Bobby Bellavance. And, as a matter of fact, they found it hard to pick out an outstanding lineman from the remainder of the Purple forward wall. They were all terrific, they insisted.”

NOV. 13, 1956 – “Two Nashua weightlifters, Ralph Boucher and Rene Lebrun, won awards in the Attleboro Weightlifting Meet this weekend.

“Boucher, showing good form, copped first place in the 148-pound class and Lebrun placed second in the 132-pound division.”

NOV. 14, 1961 – “Well over 50 basketball hopefuls responded to a general call by Alvirne High coach Gordon McCullough as preliminary training sessions got underway today in preparation for the forthcoming campaign.

“Leading the list of candidates who greeted by varsity coach McCullough and jayvee coach Jim Briggs was captain Art Bartlett, last season’s second-leading scorer. Returning with Bartlett are lettermen Gary Webster, Steve Allen, Gary Gendron and Pete Burgess.”

NOV. 15, 1966- “John Newman, three-year varsity football veteran for Buzz Harvey at Nashua High, is making quite a name for himself at Virginia Union University.

“The sophomore fullback known as the Mule at Virginia Union, recently led the Panthers to a 12-6 victory over Elizabeth City at the annual Shrine-sponsored Fish Bowl in a Central-Collegiate Athletic Association game. Newman led the Panthers offense with 126 yards on 25 carries and received the outstanding player award.”

NOV. 16, 1976 – “Arthur Debellis intercepted an Elm Street pass and took it 38 yards to the end zone for the only scored of the game as the Fairgrounds Falcons put the city’s junior highs into a three-way into a three-way deadlock with a 6-0 victory yesterday.

“The teams, now all deadlocked at 1-1 with their city rivals, will wait and see what the decision is in regard to a possible tie-breaker series.”

NOV. 17, 2001 – “The Merrimack High School field hockey team held its annual banquet on Wednesday to celebrate the 2001 season. Awards were also given out by coaches Nicki Maccini and Erin Sullivan.

“The Most Improved Player awards were given to Danielle Anderson and Kaleena Nybisco. Liz Perez and Emma Zinsmeister received Coaches awards, which are given to players who the coaches can always look to and rely on. The varsity MVP was junior Amy Forster.”

NOV. 18, 2011 – “Five boys and six girls from Greater Nashua were selected to the First Team of their respective soccer divisions.

“Bishop Guertin’s Matt Feenan in Division I, the Souhegan duo of Willis Griffith and James Sheldon in Division II, and the Wilton-Lyndeborough pairing of Willie Tremblay and Adam Edmunds in Division IV were all boys first-teamers.

“Hollis Brookline’s Briana Bruiooge was the lone girl on the Division I first team, while Milford’s Morgan Andrews and the Souhegan pair of Peyton Kent and Caroline Stone earned spots in Division II. Campbell’s Casey Mellen and Olivia Planty were honored in Division III.”
