Time Travel: Injuries couldn’t slow down ’61 Panthers

OCT. 23, 1961 – “Playing without the services of no less than five key men, Nashua High School’s young football 11 yesterday sent a makeshift lineup against Manchester Central and staged the most brilliant performance of the season in humiliating its bitter and ancient rival 50-0 before only some 3,000 spectators at Holman Stadium.

“And playing the key role in the Nashua running attack was junior George Zinkus, who scored three touchdowns, one on a 63-yard jaunt, a second time on a 38-yard gallop and a third on an 8-yard plunge.

“… Right guard and co-captain Al Neville scored on a blocked punt.”

OCT. 24, 1981 – “Keene High football coach Pat O’Reilly stood quietly amidst his pl;ayers, watching them sullenly scrape mud from their spikes before boarding the bus for the long ride homer.

“Had the scoreboard been working it probably still would have projected the final score: Nashua 14, Keene 6. But what it wouldn’t have shown was how the Keene High Blackbirds lost.

” ‘It was a lousy night for football. The field was terrible, the footing was terrible. Under these conditions what does it prove? And the officials … I thought the officials just lost control of the game. What more can I say.’ “

Not much. Keene quarterback Dave Austin was ejected in the third quarter after a brawl with Nashua backup defensive tackle Steele Newman, his backup fumbled a snap at his own 34-yard line and Nashua score on the next play when Bill Shade connected with Sergio Hebra for a touchdown. Craig Peters went in for the two-point conversion and Nashua had all the points it would need.

OCT. 25, 1986 – “The Bishop Guertin boys soccer team has had an incredible fall. Friday’s 6-1 victory ober Portsmouth was its 13th straight – a school record. The 56 goals it scored in 14 games, nine of which played against Class L tournament teams, were also a BG high.

“Junior Chris Flint had four goals against Portsmouth to finish the season with 13 goals and 11 assists, breaking the record set by Scott white in 1983. Goalie Tom Coate just missed adding to his BG career shutout record (15), which he broke Tuesday. … At 13-0-1, the Cardinals are the undisputed champions of the regular season.”

OCT. 26, 1991 – “Nashua High School senior Kim McCullion played so poorly in Wednesday’s Class L/I volleyball tournament quarterfinal victory over Alvirne that she begged coach John Connolly to take her out of the match.

“McCullion was back in top form Friday in the semifinals at Pinkerton Academy, and so were her teammates. The top-ranked Panthers, now 17-1, put a stranglehold on No. 4 Milford and never let up. They breezed to a 15-3, 15-9 decision which put them in tonight’s final at 7 against longtime nemesis Oyster River of Durham.”

OCT. 27, 2001 – “Milford High School cleared its first hurdle on the path to the state championship on Friday with plenty of room to spare. The 17-0 top seeds won their quarterfinal match at home by scores of 15-3, 15-1 to earn a trip to Tuesday’s semifinals at Pinkerton Academy. Milford meets No. 4 St. Thomas, a 2-1 winner over Hanover, at 7:15 p.m.

” ‘We got some great passing from Amber Anctil and April Wood,’ said Spartans coach Chuck Roberson.”

OCT. 28, 2006 – “Both teams played over 1,000 minutes in 16 regular-season games to position themselves for the playoffs, but it was a comparatively curt five-minute stretch of the first half that abruptly ended Hollis/Brookline High School’s season, and propelled Souhegan into the Class I boys soccer state quarterfinals.

“Some 30 seconds after the Sabers had an apparent goal taken away because of a foul, midfielder Mitchell Osbourne fed the ball to a streaking Jonathan Harris, who turned the play into a breakaway goal. That score in the 23rd minute began a scoring blitz that didn’t end until the sixth-seeded Sabers had tallied three goals some five minutes later en route to a 5-1 victory over No. 11 Hollis/Brookline.”

OCT. 29, 2011 – “Merrimack’s Chris Lore scored the game-winning goal in the second half as Merrimack moves on to the second round of the Division I boys soccer playoffs with a 2-1 win over Dover.

“Merrimack’s Anders Dahl scored the games first goal on a pass from Jeremy Gruber. Dover tied the game in the first half. Andrew Curran assisted on the Lore goal. Nate Cushman made six saves in the win.”
