AUG. 20, 1971: “Backed by some timely hitting, the Park-Recreation softball team managed to pull out an exciting 14-13 victory over Coca Cola last night at Atherton Avenue.

“Trailing for most of the night, the Parksters managed to grab a 14-11 advantage going into the last inning thanks to five-run uprising in the eighth … The victory gave the P-R men a record of 20-5 for the year with pitcher Barry Palmer running his personal mark to 18-5.”

AUG. 21, 1976: “The Nashua Dodgers moved into the semifinals of the Manchester Invitational Tourney as they knocked off the host Manchester All Stars, 5-2, behind the gutsy pitching performance of Mike Lozeau. Lozeau turned in a fine performance as he got tough when he had to, striking out five and working out of several jams with the aid of sparkling defensive plays by his teammates.

“Dave Maryanski got what proved to be the game-winning hit as singled in Mike Fleury with a shot to left in the sixth.”

AUG. 22, 1981: “When Curt Guthro, the 1980 New Hampshire bicycle motocross champion and the rest of Hudson’s Littlejohn BMX Racing Team recently began competing with riders from as far away as California, it’s not surprising that wins were a little less frequent.

“Guthro reasserted himself Wednesday night, however, as he won the age 14-15 Class at the Tri-State BMX Track.”

AUG. 23, 1991: “One semifinal has been set in the men’s singles of the Nashua City Tennis Tournament.

“One quarterfinal match was cut-and-dried with top-seeded Jason Forbes beating No. 6 Alan Macnaughton 6-1, 6-2. But the other quarterfinal was a real cliff-hanger. “No. 5 Dick Nichols outlasted No. 4 Bill Longua in the first set and took a 3-0 lead in the second. Longua rebounded to win 10 straight games, winning the second set 6-3 and taking a 4-0 lead in the third set.

“Longua, a two-time champion, was at match point before Nichols won the final three games to prevail 6-5.”

AUG. 24, 2001: “When Pinkerton Academy field hockey coach Denise Rioux looked over her roster recently, she noticed the birthdates and realized she was already coaching when most of the girls in her program were born.

But she’s hardly been marking time. In her 17 years the Astros have won four championships and reached the finals seven times. Early this season the Nashua High School graduate and Plymouth State College Hall of Famer will record her 200th coaching victory.”

AUG. 25, 2006: “Mayor Bernie Streeter watched a bevy of strikes thrown toward home plate on Thursday night, but he thinks the John Stabile ownership has been a home run for the Nashua Pride.

“I think it’s been fantastic,” said Streeter, who along with New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch was on hand for the ceremonial first pitch at Thursday night’s game against the Quebec Capitales. “If it hadn’t been for John Stabile, I don’t think we’d have had baseball here this year.”

AUG. 26, 1966: “The Nashua Police Department softball team rode to a 14-4 victory over the Fire Department in a benefit game for the Mt. Hope School on Wednesday night at Holman Stadium.

“Behind the heavy hitting of Roland Anctil (4 for 4, including a home run and three runs scored), the Police took a 5-1 lead in the first and increased the margin in every inning except the third and fifth.”
