Time Travel for Aug. 6-12
Alan Greenwood
AUG. 6, 1956: “Billy Leonard scored a par-71 to top the field in yesterday’s 18-hole medal play sweepstakes tournament conducted at the Nashua Country Club. Dick Dion finished in second place for gross honors with 74.
“In the net division, Don Joyce grabbed the top prize with 83-18-65. Second net was tied between Jerry Creteau, 76-8-68, and Maurice Noel, 75-7-68. Third net was Earl McArdle, 77-8-69.”
AUG. 7, 1966: “A five-run fifth inning and a 12-strikeout, four-hit performance by Paul Malenfant gave the North League Braves a 7-3 victory over the Knights of Columbus and the Nashua Little League Championship last night at East Little League Field.
“The Braves scored two runs in the first on a hit off losing pitcher John Coughlin, who didn’t give up another hit until he met his fate in the fifth.”
AUG. 8, 1981 – “… Last night in the third and deciding game of the City Championship Series, Dennis McCarthy made sure the final reviews he drew were like the first ones three years ago – all raves. The hard-throwing left-hander blanked the Chiefs on five hits, giving Coffey Post its second straight City Series championship thanks to his 4-0 victory.
“… Coffey Post got a run just three batters into the game. It turned out to be all the lead that McCarthy would need. Sean Hughes opened the game with a single. He moved up on Bob Soucy’s out and scored when McCarthy clubbed a double to right field.”
AUG. 9, 1991: “Two area golfers won championships in their flights at the Red Ryan CYO Golf Tournament at Derryfield Country Club on Thursday.
“Josh Pope of Nashua beat Toby Alves 1-up in 19 holes to win the first flight in the Intermediate Division. Pope defeated Rob Williams 1-up in 19 holes in the semifinals, while Jason Ricard of Hollis lost to Alves 5 and 3.
“Matt Landry of Londonderry beat Todd Ward of Nashua 1-up to win the first flight in the Junior Division.”
AUG. 10, 2006: “After the game Josh Stevens pitched on Wednesday night, it would have been a shame if the Nashua Pride right-hander had nothing to show for it.
Stevens surrendered just two hits over eight innings while striking out 10, but the Worcester Tornadoes made things interesting by scoring three runs off Pride closer Derrick DePriest in the ninth before Nashua escaped with a 6-4 win in a Can-Am League game at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.”
AUG. 11, 2011: “It was Reality Day on Lund Road. It was the first football practice in some 16 years without Tony Johnson directing the troops as head coach.
“Change is always tough, and the reasons for that change at Guertin will be a controversial topic for months to come. But what’s done is done, and the topic now should be entirely different. This was Travis Cote’s first day of school, so to speak, as the new head football coach of the Cardinals.”
AUG. 12, 1986: “Five area golfers are among 15 students who will share $8,550 in scholarship money from the Richard D. McDonough Golf Scholarship Foundation for the upcoming school year.
“The area golfers are Richard Cormier, Green Meadow, Campbellsville College freshman; Daniel Ethier, Nashua Country Club, University of New Hampshire junior; Colleen McQuade, Keene State College junior; and Craig Williamson, Amherst Country Club, Wingate College freshman.”
