JULY 24, 1956: “The Gold Sox trampled the Green Sox, 21-8, and the Blue Sox overpowered the Red Sox, 22-9, in two Nashua Girls Softball League games last night.

“At Atherton, Ave., the Gold Sox, led by Vigneault and Deschenes, pounded out 27 hits for the 21 runs. Both girls went 5 for 5. Demanche was the big hitter for the Green Sox going 3 for 5.

“… At Textile Field, the Blue Sox collected 21 hits. Guerette led the hitters going 5 for 5, including a home run. Sirois and Tiernan also had home runs as did McLennan for the Red Sox.”

One point: First names were not vital elements of local sports reports back in the day.

One question: Does anyone recall how many other different color Sox played in this league?

JULY 25, 1966: “George Juris achieved every golfer’s dream yesterday when he aced the par 3, 228-yard 14th hole at Nashua Country Club. George used a three-wood to annex the hole-in-one.

“Playing with him were Nick Pantelas, Art Zahos and John Lafazanis.”

One clarification: For those of us who are ability-challenged duffers, the dream is staying out of one rough off the tee.

JULY 26, 1976: Joanne Avard Ebbecke has become the second woman golfer with local ties to join the Ladies Professional Golfers Association tour.

“The Nashua resident joins Pat Bradley of Westford, Mass., who plays out of Nashua Country Club on the tour.”

JULY 27, 1986: “Kara Leary will be one name that those connected with Nashua’s Babe Ruth baseball program will never forget. While several girls have played in the Nashua Little League, Kara Leary is the first ever to play Babe Ruth ball. A smile comes across Kara’s face when she is asked why she didn’t play softball like the other female Little League pioneers?

“Because,” she says, looking over at her Babe Ruth manager Dave Cadorette, “I like challenges. Right Dave?”

JULY 28, 2006: “The Nashua 15-year-old All-Stars kept their hopes of a state championship alive on Thursday with a gritty 4-3 win over North Country North at state all-star tournament at Plymouth Regional High School.

“Pat Lucas’ groundout to second base allowed Alex Hernandez to score the tie-breaking run in the top of the seventh inning as Nashua beat the team it had lost to a few days earlier in the double-elimination tournament.

“Robbie Miller pitched all seven innings, surrendering just four hits while walking three and striking out four to get the win.”

JULY 29, 2011: “Mike Simard did it on the mound and at the plate Thursday night to help guide the Hudson U12s to an 8-3 win over host Dover and a spot in the Cal Ripken Major (70 foot) World Series.

Simard scattered four hits, allowing two earned runs while striking out seven Dover batters for a complete-game win in the championship game of the Cal Ripken New England Regional Tournament at Beckwith Park.

“Simard was on at the plate as well, joining Matt McKinley and Jacen Hudson with two hits apiece in the win.”

JULY 30, 2016: “Heading into the New Hampshire Open’s third and final round, Merrimack native Josh Chamberlain was the talk of Owl’s Nest Resort & Golf Club in Thornton. He overcame dehydration and cramping to finish within one stroke of the leaders after Wednesday’s opening round. Then Chamberlain held his own during Thursday’s second round - not only making the cut but sitting just two strokes back heading into the final round.

Friday was a different story for Chamberlain, who shot a 6-over par, 78 to into a three-way tie for 29th with a three-round total of 2-over (68-72-78 – 218). Chris DeForest, a professional from Cottekill, N.Y., would go on to win the 81st NH Open in a three-way playoff.”
