JULY 16, 1951: “Like Old Man River, who rolls on forever, Nashua’s king of the golfing fairways, Tommy Leonard Jr., masterfully disposed of the only logical contender of the Granite State amateur crown yesterday at Manchester Country Club, blasting Portsmouth’s Art Butler into submission for the second time in three years, 6 and 4.

“Over 500 galleryites watched Tommy can an eagle 3 on the second hole of the 36-hole match for the title, then take off from that point with the help of eight birdies to prove beyond even unreasonable doubt that he’s still boss man of New Hampshire’s links.”

Even if this were not the most interesting event reported on these pages that day, how often will readers find Old Man River, blasting a golfer into submission and “galleryites” in the same story?

JULY 17, 1956: “Ward 8 belted Wards 4-5 by a score of 9-1, and Ward 6 trounced Ward 3, 11-2, in last night’s Ward Baseball League games.

“At Marshall St. field, Ward 8’s Stan Slosek hurled a no-hitter at Wards 4-5 but the near-perfect game was spoiled with a run in the first inning.”

JULY 18, 1966: “A two-run producing double in the bottom of the eighth inning by pinch-hitter Ron LeBlanc, coupled with stout pitching performances by starter Mitch Pressman and relief hurler Rick Fuller, enabled the James E. Coffey Post 3 Legionnaires to down league-leading Post 79 of Manchester, 4-3, yesterday afternoon at Holman Stadium.”

JULY 19, 1976: “The Keglers Den slo-pitch softball team of Nashua rolled to its fourth tournament victory of the year over the weekend by defeating all comers in the Manchester Open Softball Tournament.

“Highlighting the success of the Den Men was a no-hit pitching performance by ace moundman Bill ‘Hawk’ Soubosky, who led Keglers over Carney Crug of Manchester 11-0. No-hitters in slo-pitch softball are extremely rare and one under tourney conditions is even rarer.”

JULY 20, 2006: “Hudson Post 48 got a superb relief pitching appearance from Sean Moreau, who came in during the third inning against Keene Post 6 on Wednesday, as the team took home an 11-6 win in its final district game.

“… At the plate, Tom Mante (two singles), Derek Ballum (double, two singles), and Rob Leary (two triples) each had two RBIs to lead Hudson. Casey Marques, Ben Cormier, Matt Cyr, and Ben Moreau each had RBIs.”

JULY 21, 2011: “The storybook summer of pitcher Eric Perrault continues, and his wins always seem to come at a great time for the Nashua Silver Knights.

“Perrault, the lefty from Keene State via Salem, raised his record to 5-0 with six innings of shutout ball in an 8-0 win over first-place Torrington on Wednesday.”

JULY 22, 1981: “Cindy Perkins drove in four runs as the Nashua Junior Miss All-Star softball team took a 9-0 win over Concord on Tuesday night.

“Perkins went 2 for 2 to pace the Nashua barrage in support of winning pitcher Sue Dion. Third baseman Tammie Szelest backed her up with a fine outing in the field.”
