Time for N’Keal to get real, because he won’t get any better

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Jul 7, 2021

Have you stopped laughing yet, New England Patriots fans?

Probably not. The news on Tuesday that the agent for Patriots receiver N’Keal Harry is demanding a trade had to bring some guffaws.

What a joke. The only thing Harry is in position to demand is that the Patriots accept his gratitude for allowing him to impersonate an NFL wide receiver the last two seasons.

It brings back the memory of seeing the video of Bill Belichick thinking long and hard during the 2019 NFL Draft when the Patriots first round number was up at 32. He hemmed, hawed, trying to decide between Harry and a defensive back.

“Harry,” the word came out of his mouth.

And the word that comes out now with regard to the now veteran receiver is “bust.”

Make that first round bust. Harry can’t catch a cold, let alone get open enough to catch one. He got hurt in the preseason in 2019, like a lot of rookie receivers do, and played in just seven games. He often drew the ire of a quarterback named Brady back then.

Cam Newton tried to include him in the mix, but it just didn’t work. Harry caught 33 passes for 309 yards and two TDs in 14 games. At times the Patriots tried to force feed him into the offense on reverses, etc.

But he was slip sliding away. With the signings of veteran free agents Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne, Harry was falling further down the depth chart.

Trade him? For what? A crate of footballs?

“For the past several months, I have been working in cooperation with the Patriots behind the scenes to put a plan in place to allow N’Keal to thrive in New England,” Jamal Tooson said.

Plan? Behind the scenes? Was Tooson in on devising the game plans? At least Tooson took a step away from fantasy land when he said that the 86 targets Harry had “obviously hasn’t met the expectations the Patriots and N’Keal had … ”

Tooson went on to say that “following numerous conversations with the Patriots I believe it’s time for a fresh start for both parties” and wants his client moved before the start of camp.

Why does the phrase “future considerations” come to mind if somebody takes Harry, who has two years left on the four-year, $10.1 million rookie deal he signed after the draft two years ago.

Belichick got one right with Jakobi Meyers, the undrafted free agent who signed the same time Harry did. And obviously we all know he got this one wrong.

Harry pretty much showed right away he was a bust. OK, so maybe, just maybe, he could improve the following year. Nope. Hey, the Patriots tried. The agent is trying make a pre-emptive strike to avoid having his client get cut. But that may not have happened as Harry counts $2.7 million against the cap but has a dead cap hit of $4.7 million.

The guy stinks. Plain and simple. He’ll probably end up on IR again, this time during camp. The Patriots, according to the NFL Network, have tried to deal Harry but haven’t gotten any offers they like — big surprise. Maybe someone will offer them a seventh round pick – and it’ll probably be a conditional one at that.

And the condition may be that Harry get open with his new team in more than one play. Oh, and catch the ball, too.

Something Tooson’s “behind the scenes” work didn’t accomplish.

We all can’t stop laughing.
