MAY 1, 1956: “Kenny Rice, former member of the Nashua High golf team, yesterday notched his first hole-in-one while playing at Groton Country Club.

“Rice, a student at Lawrence Academy, canned the ace on the 150-yard fourth hole, using a 9-iron and then went on to finish the first nine with a brilliant 33. In the foursome were Gerry Creteau, also of Nashua, and Taylor Black and Bob Marler of Winchester.”

MAY 2, 1961: “The Nashua High track squad dipped into the ranks of the dashmen to select a leader for the 1961 campaign yesterday afternoon, naming sprint ace Robert Colacchio captain.

“A key member of last season’s record-breaking relay team that included state champions Eddie Lacombe (100 and 220) and Dick Danforth (440) along with Tiny Art Trudell. Colacchio is the sole point-scoring veteran to return from last season’s starry squad.”

MAY 3, 1971: “Bishop Guertin High, paved by Gary Farnsworth, Arthur Guilbeault and Mike Morin, posted its third straight spring track victory of the young season by handily defeating Dracut, Mass., and Hollis in a meet held Saturday.

“The Cardinals captured 10 first places out of 13 events as Farnsworth notched three wins, Guilbeault chalked up a pair of wins and Morin added two victories. The scores were Guertin 64, Dracut 43 and Hollis 24.”

MAY 4, 2001: “Alvirne had no trouble against Manchester West on Thursday as the Broncos improved their record to 6-4 with a 5-2 win over Manchester West.

“Jill Kucij pitched the win for Alvirne giving up four hits while striking out three. Katie McGrath led the offensive attack going 2-3, including a triple and two RBI’s. Katie Cotter went 2-3 with one RBI and a stolen base.”

MAY 5, 2006: “A very good pitching performance from Molly Martel and some luck both on defense and offense helped the Tomahawks to a 4-2 victory over Bishop Guertin at BG’s Elliott Field.

The Class L game was tied at 2-2 going into the top of the seventh inning, and the Tomahawks were still looking for their first hit of the day off hard-throwing Guertin senior left-hander Stacie Goddard.

But Merrimack managed to score two runs on two hits and two BG errors in the top of the seventh to collect a lead they would not relinquish.

MAY 6, 2011: “Lights, camera, action. That’s Kyle Turner’s cue to take center stage. You see, he does not view the spotlight as his enemy. On the contrary, it’s his best friend.

Turner, with a hard fastball at 85-88 mph and a nasty slider, is almost always in the zone if you’re talking about the strike zone. And this year he’s always in the spotlight, as one of the area’s and state’s (in Division I), for that matter, best pitchers with a 4-0 mark, one save, and only two earned runs allowed.

MAY 7, 2016: “In a surprising move, Bishop Guertin High School’s Tony Johnson, the architect of one of the most dominant football programs the area has seen, has stepped down as head football coach to concentrate more on his athletic director duties.

“Johnson, who has been handling the dual role the last four years, took over the Cardinal football program in 1994 and the school has won six Division II titles in the last seven years, including the last three, with 10 championship game appearances overall.”
