A night of draft drama may actually end Patriots drama
Oh, the drama.
It’s been a long time since we’ve been on the edge of our seats waiting and wondering just what the New England Patriots would do in the NFL Draft.
And the NFL didn’t disappoint.
The fun began with the San Francisco 49ers picking at No. 3, and they chose Trey Lance, which meant they would likely hold on to the apple of every Patriot fan’s eyes in Jimmy Garoppolo.
Your mind is spinning. OK, so Mac Jones didn’t go to the Niners as we all thought. Simple math, Jones and the other razzle dazzle guy, Ohio State’s Justin Fields left and 11 teams picking before New England at 15.
Who wants a QB the most? Patriot fans would have gone nuts had Belichick, say, traded back and grabbed a second tier guy. Or not picked a QB at all.
The answer to the above question was Da Bears, who traded up with the Giants at No. 11 and grabbed Fields. Hey, it’s Big 10 territory, why not.
Carolina, nope. Not even Denver. So as Belichick said, “As always, Draft Day’s always an interesting day. A lot of preparation, wait to see how things unfold. Mac was available there at our pick. He was a guy we spent a lot of time with. Felt that was the best pick at the time for us.
“We just try to do the best we can to help our football team, and that’s what we did,” Belichick said. “That’s what we’ll do (today) and that’s what we’ll do Saturday.”
It all worked out. Every year in the draft there’s a player who is all dressed up with nowhere to go, as the ESPN cameras keep depicting. Jones was that guy this year, until the cameras caught him smiling while on the phone.
Yeah, he called. Belichick, that is.
“Honestly, New England’s just a great place,” Jones said. “In watching them the past years, they do everything right. … It comes down to winning football games and New England’s done that, but they don’t look in the past, they just look in the future.”
Well they can’t look in the past; it’s too painful. A guy named Brady dominated it, and now Jones has been identified as the next long term guy, as the future. Belichick immediately tried to cut off any “Will he start” questions by declaring right at the start of his video press conference with regard to veteran Cam Newton that “Cam’s our quarterback.” We heard that in the second half of last year, too, and it’ obvious that he’s going with the same script. For that script to change, he said, “Somebody would have to play better than he does.”
Simple stuff. But now the Patriots are moving ahead with the QB speculation over, one would hope. We won’t be waiting for Garoppolo to be pried loose, and the drama may end. Funny thing is, drama is all Jones knows with New England. He recalled the only other time he’d been in Boston, and that was to catch a cruise ship when he was around 10 years old.
And almost lost his foot.
“My foot got stuck,” he said. “I had a Croc on in an escalator and it got stuck in the escalator, that’s all I remember. But yeah, kind of crazy. … I just remember I literally almost lost my foot.”
Well, now he’ll be putting his best foot forward after a night of drama.
