Either defense was considered superfluous or local basketball teams offered the fast-breaking, NBA champion Boston Celtics the highest form of flattery. Either way, there were some serious shootouts on local floors back in the day.

APRIL 3, 1961: “The Junior Chamber of Commerce on Saturday evening captured the Bob Wrenn City Basketball playoffs by defeating the Nashua Corporation 125-122 in a thrilling engagement at the Y Gym.

“For the Jaycees, Art Edstrom was the big gun in the rebounding department and came up with 41 points to pace the attack. Tom Flahive scored 24 of his 38 points in the first half.

“For Nashua Corporation, Jerry Gaidmore had 29 while George Willey finished with 28.”

APRIL 4, 1966: Despite a 56-point output by Joe Hargen, Don Land and Nick Mandravelis, the Nashua Martinizers went down to a 117-89 defeat in the final game of the annual Seacoast Basketball Tourney on Saturday night.

“… Hargen scored 19 points and was named Most Valuable Player of the tourney. Land led the Nashua five with 21 points and Mandravelis scored 17.”

APRIL 5, 1976: “The Southern NH and GNYHA Squirt A hockey teams played to a standstill in the playoff finals of the Skate 3 Interstate Hockey League. The game was called after three sudden-death periods could not settle the championship with the score knotted at 3-3.

“… In the second period, the tide slowly turned in favor of Nashua’s Green Hornets as Darrin Meisner and Maurice Scoville both scored, then Todd Upton’s goal in the opening minute of the third period knotted the score at 3-3. Assisting on the Nashua goals were Upton, Meisner and Mike Potvin.”

APRIL 6, 1981: “Sue Lupica led a Nashua sweep of the top three spots in the Women’s Open Division of the second annual 10-kilometer Mayor’s Cup Road Race in which 170 runners competed Sunday in Nashua.

“Running for the sponsoring Gate City Striders, Lupica was the first female to finish. Her time of 37:20 bested Pamela Bidwell, who finished in 41:55 and Leslie Piercy in 43:44.

“… Karen Dowling of Nashua Senior High was first in the Junior Girls Division in 42:43. … Mary Ann Matson won the Women’s Masters in 51:38.”

APRIL 7, 1986: “As they prepare to break camp today, the Nashua Pirates have finalized their roster for the opening of the 1986 Eastern League season Friday night at New Britain.

“Pitchers will include three players who ended the 1985 season in Nashua – Rich Saveur (9-10 last year), Pete Rice (who spent most of the season on the disabled list) and Shawn Holman.”

APRIL 8, 2001: Players of the Year from the Telegraph Basketball All Stars announced.

“Liz Dancause, Nashua:

“Continuing a tradition of great players produced by Nashua High School, Dancause was one of the state’s most honored girls basketball players in recent memory. The senior averaged 17.2 points, 3.6 assists, 3.1 steals and 9.1 rebounds in helping lead the Panthers to their third straight state championship. Ms. New Hampshire Basketball also was named Parade All-American, Nike/WBCA All-American, a Street & Smith Fifth-Team All-American and New Hampshire’s Gatorade Player of the Year.”

“Mike Konovelchick Alvirne:

“Konovelchick, a senior forward, averaged 14.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.3 block shots, 3.2 assists, and 1.9 steals per game in leading the 19-3 Broncos to their first Class L championship game since 1978.

The New Hampshire Gatorade Player of the year also is a two-time All-State player, and a two-time Class L All-Star team member.”

APRIL 9, 2006: “The question circulating around the Merrimack Ten Pin bowling alley last week had to be ‘who brought the ringer?’

Don Weinstein lit up the lanes during Monday Night Industrial League play spanning March 29-April 4 when he bowled a series of 800. That’s three games of 266, 267 and 267 for a series total of 800. Weinstein, who bowls for the JJ Ciampa team, didn’t even earn high game or average marks during the span. Those went to Steve Harter (277), of Sparton Tech, and Greg Griebel (213), of Hell Hole, respectively.”
