A 7-9 season has Belichick seeking some retail therapy

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Mar 16, 2021

Looking to go on a little shopping spree?

Call Bill Belichick.

We’ve already got a list. Been thinking about getting an air fryer, reading all these good things about them.

How about it, Bill?

Kinda sorta wanting to get a snow blower next year. Yeah, yeah, we know. Never really had one, it’s always been shovel, shovel, toil and trouble. But like this humble scribe, that gets old fast.

Bill’s good for it, we’re sure. Heck, in the spring, the prices will for snow blowers will likely come down.

Can’t wait.

If you need shopping done, call the Patriots coach. He’s proving fairly good at it, judging from Monday’s busy spending bonanza, as he took the crowbar off the wallet.

Now, let’s not get fooled. Of all the moves Belichick made in outside free agents, seven in all, (Carl Davis and Deatrich Wise are their own), the agreements with former Titans tight end Jonnu Smith (114 catches for 1,302 yards and 16 TDs in 60 career games) and former Ravens edge rusher Matt Judon (34.5 sacks in 76 career games) are the big ticket items.

Former Dolpins defensive lineman Davon Godchaux, former Jet defensive lineman (6-7, 300 pounds, yikes) Henry Anderson, receivers Kendrick Bourne and Nelson Agholor, and former Eagles defensive back Jalen Mills could be keys. They’re more than depth pieces, but can get the job done. In other words, they likely are better than what the Patriots had. #Upgrades.

Now we have to see if the Savvy Shopper will bring back center David Andrews and defensive lineman Lawrence Guy.

There will probably be some more surprises. Obviously, Belichick saw what we all saw last year, with the possible exception of the quarterback who can’t throw that he just brought back: This team, for the most part, stunk.

Other teams in the past have done what the Patriots just did, diving into the deep end of the pool even before the lifeguard gets there. The Patriots were careful, always waiting an hour after they ate to go swimming, and always in the shallow end.

But New England always had the best swimmers. Not anymore. They have not drafted any real super impact players in a loooong time, and when that happens, you have to delve into free agency.

Often it’s fools gold, but the question is who are the fools? The players, who never see half the dollars they signed for (it’s all in the guarantees and signing bonuses), or the teams, who often don’t get the bang for their bucks?

Still, we’ve never seen anything like this from the Patriots. But it’s clear they have a plan, signing Newton, trading for offensive lineman Trent Brown, dealing Marcus Cannon, and bringing in a ton of players in one day.

Now if they could just get a quarterback who can throw the ball.

Other than that, we suggest you send your grocery lists to Bill Belichick at One Patriots Place.

Last season’s disaster apparently sent him to retail therapy.

Now Bill, about that air fryer…
