MARCH 13, 1956: “Nashua High’s new track coach, Francis Tate, called out his first contingent of Purple harriers yesterday and began preliminary training sessions for the forthcoming campaign.

“A group of 20 candidates, including a host of veterans who helped Nashua annex its first state track championship last year, responded to the initial call and workouts got underway at the high school gym. … Reporting for the session were a group of lettermen who will form the nucleus for the defending Class A championship combine. They are Roland Payer, Charlie Parker, Ray Brooks, Carl Jeglinski, John Flahive, John Sullivan, Miles Keefe, Robert Raby and John Wardner.”

MARCH 14, 1966: “St. Patrick’s of Milford remained undefeated after capturing the Ralph Fair Memorial Trophy, beating St. Joe’s 53-43 yesterday afternoon at the Bishop Guertin gym.

“The Most Valuable Player award went to Jim McLaren of St. Pat’s and the sportsmanship award was captured by Johnny Dufour (St. Pat’s of Nashua) and Bruce Kopka (St. Christopher).”

MARCH 15, 1986: “It was, in one frozen moment, the ultimate in bitter and the height of sweet.

“It was the Nashua High School boys basketball team, celebrating a victory only the Purple Panthers thought they could win.

“It was Bishop Guertin High School, stunned and devastated, the Cardinals’ dreams of an undefeated season and a state championship snuffed out with one mortal blow.

Chris Madigan scored 24 points, helping the Panthers fend off a BG rally in the closing minutes for a 66-65 win and the Class L championship.

MARCH 16, 1996: “Remember those old cigarette advertisements with people saying they’d rather fight than switch? Well, former Nashua High School gymnast Cindy Peterson decided to switch rather than fight.

“It was, she determined, a battle she couldn’t win. A broken wrist ended her gymnastics career a couple years ago and led her toward the swimming pool. And there, Peterson has been just as successful. A New Hampshire high school state record holder in gymnastics all-around, she is now competing in this weekend’s NCAA Zone Swimming and Diving Championships for Northeastern University.”

MARCH 17, 1976: “Nashua’s Dan Caron, coming off his finest year as a competitive swimmer, has been elected captain of the Keene State College men’s varsity team for the 1976-77 season.

“Caron, a sophomore, played a key role in the team’s eighth-place finish at the recently held New England Championships at Springfield College”

MARCH 18, 2001: “Jenn Hogan knew it as soon as she stepped on the floor at the University of New Hampshire’s Whittemore Center early yesterday afternoon.

“She felt great and felt even better after taking a few shots. She glanced over at senior teammates Liz Dancause and Meranne Whitney and knew they felt the same way.

“… ‘I knew I was on,’ said Hogan, who scored 27 points to lead Nashua to its third straight Class L championship with a 70-46 victory over Dover.”

MARCH 19, 1951: “Coach Charles ‘Buzz’ Harvey’s football squad, currently working out at Holman Stadium, may face a high school 11 in a practice game to climax its spring training session.

“The possibility of a spring game looms providing the boys have reached top physical condition, it was reported. Some 30 boys have undergone spirited drills outdoors the past week with both Harvey and assistant coach Tony Marandos. … Present plans call for the offensive teams to be spearheaded by quarterbacks Pete Prince and Andy Pappathan.”
