Time Travel for Feb. 13-19

These days, watching two NBA teams slog through four quarters can seem like an 11-hour exercise. Blame that on hyperactive refs, too many flops and endless TV time outs.

There was a time when two sets of soldiers played 11 hours for fun and a blink of glory.

FEB. 13, 1965: “Ken LaTour, a former Nashua High trackman and later a University of New Hampshire track and basketball star, recently had the distinction of taking part in a marathon basketball game at Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, Calif.

“First Lt. LaTour and a group of Mather players finally brought their game to a halt after 11 hours of continuous play, except for a few 1-minute breaks and a 15-minute time out for lunch at the 4-hour mark. The teams went on to eclipse the old mark of 10 hours, 10 minutes set by a college fraternity at Westerville, Ohio.”

LaTour led all scorers with 282 points. The final score was 732-698, though the details of how the teams were formed was not reported. Presumably, the team with the 282-point scorer won.

FEB. 14, 1975: “The Nashua High wrestling team turned in another outstanding performance last night at the Fairgrounds Junior High gym, defeating Con-Val 40-9.

“This is the time to be moving up,” said coach Paul Bellavance. “We’re hitting our peak right now and it couldn’t be at a better time.”

Bellavance said that Paul Rivard was “the only one in the state to beat Joe Lobacki at 147.”

FEB. 15, 1980: “The long wait is, at last, over for the Hollis Cavaliers.

“The last glory year for the Cavs was 1974, six years ago. It’s been that long since the girls qualified for the tournament. The seniors on the team were in the sixth grade. Diana Homoleski, a varsity freshman, was in the third grade.

“… They wrapped up their best regular season since ’74 last night with a 32-24 win over Mount St. Mary.”

FEB. 16, 1985: “Merrimack took at least temporary charge of the 12th and final Class L boys basketball playoff berth last night with a 59-55 victory over Exeter.

“… Jeff Lastowka came through in the clutch with seven of his nine points down the stretch. Jim Donohue and Greg Thomas also netted key one-and-one free throw chances to hold off the Blue Hawks.”

FEB. 17, 2001: “In the Division II Alpine Skiing State Meet, the Nashua boys team finished fourth with a team score of 252. Freshman David Maynard placed ninth in the slalom and 11th in the giant slalom.

“For the girls, Nashua had 169 points and finished sixth. Nicole Tellier placed seventh in the slalom and eighth in the giant slalom.”

FEB. 18, 2006: “Three players scored in double figures for Nashua South and the Panthers held Winnacunnet to eight total points in the middle two quarters in their 56-49 win Friday at home.

“Mike Chroney led the Panthers with 13 points while Matt Feehan and Sammy Alexanian added 12 and 11.”

FEB. 19, 2016: “If anyone didn’t know about Nashua High School North sophomore Alonzo Linton, they do now.

“Linton had 13 of his game-high 29 points as they held off city rival Nashua South, 78-63, to complete a Titans sweep of their basketball doubleheader in a packed Titans Gym. North handily won the girls opener, 58-37.”
