Just how painful was this Super Bowl to watch, Pats fans?

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Feb 8, 2021

Ah, yes, in Bill We Trust, right?

How many New England Patriots fans were shaking their heads, saying Bill Belichick’s name in vain as they watched Tom Brady win his seventh Super Bowl on Sunday night as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer?

And rather easily, by a 31-9 count.

How about Patriots owner Robert Kraft

‘s name, when they watched Rob Gronkowski spike the ball not once but twice in the end zone? OK, we’ll give him Antonio Brown, he was a bad guy and had to go.

But heck, the guy owns the Patriots. He certainly could have prevented the greatest quarterback of all time from walking out that door. And his coach tried to trade one of the best tight ends of all tie.

What happened to the dynasty? Too much of a good thing. Too many egos. Whatever it was that force Brady to bolt, it certainly could have been avoided , but not at the 11th hour.

And now ye reap what ye sow.

That all being said, Sunday’s game was shocking. That the Chiefs didn’t get in the end zone was incredible. Pat Mahomes had a 52.3 QB passer rating, lowest of his career.

But Tampa Bay’s defense was the reason. They dominated the Chiefs’ makeshift offensive line. It was just a bad matchup for KC with the injuries it had up front.

The Bucs simply beat the Chiefs up. Old fashioned football, and it works.

“They were the better team today,” Mahomes said after. “They beat us pretty good. Worst I think I’ve been beaten in a long time.”

Of course it didn’t help the Chiefs that Andy Reid had another Andy Reid moment, foolishly calling time outs in the final minute of the first half while Brady&Co had the ball. It was 14-6, force Brady to hurry up, play defense, and go in at halftime one score down.

But no, that wasn’t good enough, and the over zealous refs and the Brady made the Chiefs pay. Dumb.

But that happens to coaches when they play Brady.

“I’m so proud of all these guys out here, everything we dealt with all year,” Brady said. “We had a rough month of November, but BA had all the confidence in us, the team had a lot of confidence, we came together at the right time.

“I think we knew this was going to happen (tonight), now didn’t we?”

Well, no, at least not 11 months ago when Brady left New England to sign with Tampa Bay. We figured the Bucs, 7-9 the year before, would improve and then maybe in the second year of Brady’s deal it would happen.

But there are a few teams who have won Super Bowls with late regular season surges, teams in late November you would have said no way. The Bucs are just the latest.

“We ended up playing our best,” Brady said, “at the end of the year.”

And there was no drama. Brady was playing for a good ol’ guy in Bruce Arians, who basically always calls it as he sees it. So when he answered a few questions about a couple of bad Brady picks early in the season, it created a firestorm – except in Tampa.

“Oh Tom and I laughed so much about that stuff, it was hilarious,” Arians told the NFL Network last night. “Too many talking heads out there. … I love the guy, we have a great relationship.”

Brady was asked by CBS’ Jim Nance where this one ranked.

“I’m not making any comparisons,” Brady said. “Being down here, and experiencing it with this group of guys is – every year is amazing. And this team is world champions forever, you can’t take it away from us.”

Oh, and he left us with this message on the stage at Raymond James Stadium.

“Yeah, we’re coming back, coming back,” Brady said. “You know that.”

Thank goodness Patriot fans didn’t hear that from Cam Newton last month, right?

Keep shaking your head, because Brady’s return means, according to the schedule, he’ll be coming to Foxborough next season a defending Super Bowl champion to play the Patriots.

Can’t wait.
