Before drifting back into history, please tolerate one peek into the near future:

Kansas City 27, Tampa Bay 17.

Tom Brady deserves all the accolades he is enjoying. But the hurdle he faces in winning his first post-Belichick championship is insurmountable:

The Chiefs are better.

FEB. 6, 1961 – “A rink from Schenectady, NY, skipped by Jonathan Pearson yesterday won the top competition and received the Granite State trophy by defeating Winchester No. 2 14-10 in the finals of the GS Bonspiel curled at the Nashua Country Club.

“Winning the Patterson Medal, the No. 2 event of the Bonspiel, was a Nashua rink skipped by Harry Coronis and made up of Archie Williamson, Claude Henry and Normand Pelletier. The local foursome had little trouble in defeating Lennoxville, Quebec, 13-5, in their finals match.”

FEB. 7, 1966 – “Nashua High skated to its third straight shutout hockey victory Saturday, pounding a hapless Portsmouth Clipper sextet, 8-0.

“For goalie Kevin Palanski it was his fourth whitewash victory of the hockey season. The Purple Blades now hold a 10-3 season record. They are 5-1 in New Hampshire competition.

“Two goals by Ron Nadeau and a Dick Henry hat trick led the NHS skaters to win No. 10.”

FEB. 8, 1971 – “Bishop Guertin, coming off two tough defeats at the hands of Trinity and Lebanon, stunned Merrimack for the first time on its home court since the rivalry existed by a score of 89-68 Saturday night.

“The Cardinals were led by Gary Farnsworth and Peter Keenan, who netted 28 and 21 points.”

FEB. 9, 1976 – “Upwards of 300 watched the fourth annual Elks Regional Hoop Shoot free throw contest Saturday afternoon at the Chestnut St. Gymnasium in Nashua. Two New Hampshire boys, 8-year-old Steven Piwowarski of Nashua and 12-year-old Scott Leighton of Dover won their respective age division championships.”

FEB. 10, 1981 – “Mount St. Mary Seminary doesn’t have a basketball team that’s headed anywhere in particular this year – but oh, does the future look heavenly.

“With Hollis High School entertaining thoughts of making the tournament and pressing the Mounties for the win and the extra rating points they’d provide, the Freshman Connection came through for the Mount on Monday night in Nashua. Freshmen Missy Zagorites and Sandy Yagielowicz supplied all the big plays at the end as the Mounties came from behind to snatch away a 45-42 victory.

“Zagorites and Yagielowicz combined for 24 points, with 16 and eight respectively.”

FEB. 11, 1986 – “Chris Madigan of Nashua High School is within one hot night of reaching the 1,000-point mark for his career. Madigan scored 26 points against Alvirne on Friday to push his career total to 968 points. He has scored 438 points in 16 games this season for an area-leading 27.4 average.

“The Purple Panthers are scheduled to go against West in Manchester tonight. Madigan scored 31 points when Nashua beat West 81-65 Dec. 20.”

FEB. 12, 1991 – “Mike McMurray may have said goodbye to the fans on his home court at Wilton-Lyndeborough High School on Monday night. If so, he did it in style.

“The 13-4 Warriors are tied for fourth in Class S with Groveton, and if they finish in the top four they won’t play a home game for the rest of the winter. So last night the Warriors decided to honor their all-time scoring leader who notched his 1,700th point at the end of a 53-40 win over the Concord Christian School.”
