JAN. 30, 1961: “Sparked by the 10-point scoring performance of Dick Diggins, Nashua High’s trackmen ran wild Saturday to post a 49-28 triumph over Exeter High to mark their second win in as many starts.

“Diggins was the top point-getter when he won the 40-yard dash and the 300, but his efforts had to be shared with the record-breaking accomplishments of Bob Dunbar and Al Neville. Dunbar set a new school record in the 600 when he was clocked at 1:20, one second better than Dick Stockdale’s 1959 record. Neville established a new shot-put mark by heaving the 12-pound ball 48 feet, 11-3/4 inches.”

JAN. 31, 1966: “Peter Steer of Nashua is one of two Granite Staters playing on the UNH freshman hockey team this year.

Steer, a Nashua High graduate, has moved into a regular spot on the third line and has assisted two goals to date.

“The Kittens wound up first-semester action last week with a 15-2 win over Colby bringing their record to 6-1.”

One UNH alum, pondering the decades since his graduation, can’t resist chuckling at a sub-varsity Wildcat team being referred to as “The Kittens.”

FEB. 1, 1986: “There isn’t a team in Class L boys basketball which has lost more tough, down-to-the-wire decisions this winter than Alvirne High School. Friday night’s game in Milford was no different for the Broncos, who led throughout most of the contest before a three-point play by Mike Facques in the closing seconds clinched the Spartans’ 53-52 victory.

“The win lifted Milford’s record to 9-2 as it drives toward the state tournament while Alvirne dropped to 1-9.”

FEB. 2, 1976: “A series of incidents, considered by Bishop Guertin hockey coach Paul Fisher as ‘mutual,’ forced an early ending to the Guertin-Trinity High hockey game at Tyngsboro’s Skate 3 rink Saturday night.

“Fisher explained that he felt both sides, his team and coach Paul Amero’s Pioneers, were at fault in a series of fights with each other in the game. The contest was halted by head referee Clarence ‘Buzz’ Littell with 1:51 left in the third period. He awarded the game to Trinity as the Pioneers were leading 4-2 at the time.”

FEB. 3, 1981: “Perhaps inspired by pre-game ceremonies which honored him for reaching the 1,000-point barrier in his junior year, Wilton High’s Dean Larpenter scored a game-high 17 points as the Wilton Warriors downed Mascenic, 42-25.

“The win was Wilton’s thirteenth straight, tops in Class S.”

FEB. 4, 1991: From a feature on future Olympian Laura Gerraughty: “At the University of New Hampshire this winter, at indoor meets which normally run like clockwork, time stands still when Laura Gerraughty is about to throw. Crowds of 300 or 400, many of whom know little about the event, gravitate to the shot put area, knowing they are about to see something special. How special? Simply watch Gerraughty, then watch one of her closest in-state rivals. In an event in which the top competitors are often separated by inches, Gerraughty is throwing 17 feet farther than the next best New Hampshire girl.

“So why do hundreds gather to watch a girl glide across a small circle and heave a steel ball? Because they know they’re seeing something they might never see again.”

FEB. 5, 2016: “The way things were going for the Merrimack High School boys basketball team Thursday night, it wouldn’t matter how much the Tomahawks could score. Londonderry was shredding Merrimack’s man-to-man defense, and by the middle of the second quarter, coach Tim Goodridge had seen enough.

“For the first time all season, Goodridge switched the Tomahawks to a triangle-and-two defense, and the players were able to execute it well enough to pull out a 53-46 win over the Lancers. … Ian Roberts scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the second half and Zak Kerr added 12 points.”
