JAN. 9, 1951: “Jackets were awarded to 41 members of the Nashua semiprofessional Tiger grid squad at a recent postseason gathering held at the McNulty-Foley Rose Room, marking an official close to the organization’s first and possibly last season for awhile.

“Among the 41 athletes awarded jackets by master of ceremonies Ed Sweeney, four have already left for duty with the armed services and a fifth is expected to leave the city this weekend. Already in uniform are ends Harry Grieves and John Hodgdon (Marines), Chuck Morse (Navy) and Al Kashulines (Air Force). Candidate for the Marines is star halfback Earle McKeown.”

JAN. 10, 1966: “The final roster of the Granite State Hockey League’s All Star team was announced today by coach Ron Peters of the Nashua Royals.

“The Granite Staters will skate three lines featuring the top four scorers in the loop and composed of Nashua’s Pete Merrill, Joe Monahan and Buzz Littell. The Royals also contribute the two best rear guards in the league in Mike Frigard and Ron Therrien. Forwards Ed Donahue and Guy Marcoux were chosen, along with penalty killers Jean Cote and Norm Charland.”

JAN. 11, 1971: “Before a capacity crowd at the Police Athletic League’s Boxing Show at Spring Street Junior High on Friday night, two of the PAL’s top awards were presented to Lawrence Elliott and Winthrop L. Carter, representing the Nashua Corporation Fund, Inc.

“Elliott, president of Nashua Beef, received the sportsmanship award while the Nashua Corporation Fund received the Educational Award.”

JAN. 12, 1971: “The Bishop Guertin High School hockey team split two games this past weekend, defeating Lowell High School by a score of 3-1 on Saturday night at Skate 3 in Tyngsborough, while falling to the Trinity High Pioneers 4-2 at the JFK Coliseum in Manchester.

“On Saturday night BG drew first blood as Charlie Hall continued his hot scoring, drilling a wrist shot that the Lowell goalie misplayed. Paul Babinski got the lone assist. Guertin took a two-goal lead when Mike Tardiff blitzed a slapshot past the Lowell netminder … Senior Mike Ayotte added an insurance goal at 4:43 of the final period.”

Mark Fisher and Charles Sweet had BG’s goals against Trinity.

JAN. 13, 1981: “Milford, using the weapons Central has battered so many opponents with so often – rebounding and the press – stung the Little Green with their second loss of the season, 51-40. Milford, now 8-0 during the regular season and 10-1 overall, had been ranked second and Central, 8-2, was third entering the contest between two teams which had won six state titles in the last five years.

“… The Spartans got big games from sophomore forward Leslie Laychak, who led all scorers with 16 points and rebounds with 13, and senior center Sandi Kean, who had 14 points and six rebounds.”

JAN. 14, 1986: “Ron Makarawicz of Nashua took a first place in an open power-lifting meet held at Don’s Physical Fitness in Concord over the weekend.

“Makarawicz, a weight-lifter at the Andrews Gym, took first place in the 220-pound division, Masters Class and tied for first place in the open division.”

JAN. 15, 1991: “The Boys Club of Nashua/Girls Incorporated swim team overwhelmed the Arlington (Mass.) Boys/Girls Club 180-80 recently. The Dolphins prevailed in every age category and won six of nine relays.
