Here is a reminder of what can happen when an All-State tackle makes a seamless transition from football season into basketball?

DEC. 13, 1980: “When you have a good game plan for your hoop squad, you don’t mess around with it – and Merrimack High School definitely has a good one.

“The Plan goes by the name of 6-foot-5, 245-pound Walt Housman, a first-team All-State tackle for the Tomahawk football team. In Alvirne’s C.J. Steckevicz Gym Friday night The Plan amassed 35 points and hauled in 20 rebounds, helping the ‘Hawks to a 73-67 victory against the Broncos.”

DEC. 14, 1960: “With several divisional leaders yet to be heard from, Nashua Boosters Club officials last night estimated that $2,500, or almost 25% of the goal had been collected or pledged in the drive to honor the Nashua High football squad.

“Target of the campaign is to send the gridsters to New York for a few days during the school’s Christmas vacation.”

Now that beats a two-hour awards banquet. Telegraph editor Fred Dobens wanted to spread the cheer.

“We would like to see this drive extended to all Nashua teams which performed well this year such as the basketball, baseball and track teams, all of which came up with coveted championships. Of course, it will cost money, but then why be partial.”

DEC. 15, 1975: “The surging Skate 3 Huskies, behind another sparkling performance from goalie Jim Browder, moved to within six points of first-place Springfield with a 5-3 victory over the Olympics.”

DEC. 16, 1955: “Jerry Asbury of 16 Dinsmore St. on Sunday took a 120-pound spike-horn buck in Wilton and escaped serious injury in the process.

“He shot at the deer at a distance of about 20 feet as it was charging toward him. Following the shot, Asbury jumped behind a tree as the deer leaped and crashed at the spot where he was standing.”

If only they had body cameras back in the day. …

DEC. 17, 2000: “The Bishop Guertin hockey team has something to prove. And the Cardinals played like they are fully aware of that fact when they opened their season with an 8-0 drubbing of the Trinity Pioneers at Manchester’s West Side Arena on Saturday.

“… Guertin received two goals and an assist from senior forward Dave Dufresne, a goal and two helpers from senior front-liner Bob Langlais, a goal and an assist from junior forward Dan Travis, and two assists each from senior defenseman Dan Conley and freshman forward Scott Crowder.”

DEC. 18, 2005: “Matt Sera scored two goals, including the eventual game-winner, as the Alvirne High School hockey team won its first game of the season in beating Kingswood at Sake 3 Arena on Saturday.

“Al Fiorenza had a goal and an assist while Zach Lubinski had two assists. Chris Castellano had one assist. Goalie Jeff Bouley made 22 saves.”

DEC. 19, 2015: “Tim Neverett’s professional dream looks like it is about to come true.

“The 49-year-old Nashua native has spent the last seven years as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates broadcast team. But, according to multiple media reports, he has been offered the job as the Boston Red Sox radio play-by-play man. Neverett would work alongside longtime Sox broadcaster Joe Castiglione.”
