OCT. 31, 1950 – A scheduling mix-up that marred a game at Holman Stadium between the semi-pro Nashua Tigers and Dorchester (Mass.) annoyed venerable Telegraph sports editor Frank Stawasz.

“Were it possible this writer would recommend stepping off a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against the Nashua High School athletic bigwigs for their shenanigans the past weekend.

“An order prohibiting the semi-professional Nashua Tigers from using the down markers and stakes last Saturday night forced the Tigers to hurriedly round up a pair of ski poles, rope and a cardboard box with numbers inscribed thereupon with crayon to substitute for the chain and down marker ordinarily used by game officials to keep track of the progress of the ball and downs at the stadium.”

NOV. 1, 1955 – “Nashua Country Club pro Phil Friel teamed with partner Charley Molloy of Franklin Park, Mass., to finish third in the New England PGA’s annual Pro-Pro Championship at the Wanumetonomy Golf Club (Middleton, R.I.) posting a best ball of 70-69-139.

“Art Harris of Meadow Brook, former assistant to Friel here, and Bud Trumbull of Framingham, Mass., toured the layout in 72-68-140, to finish fourth.’

NOV. 2, 1965 - “Six New England football players have been cited by the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference for their performance in last week’s games, including Nashua High alum Greg Landry.

“Landry, the University of Massachusetts quarterback, who completed 20 of 25 passes for 300 yards, was named the University Division’s ‘Sophomore of the Week.’

NOV 3, 1980 – “Sunday mornings are usually reserved for two things – going to church or sleeping late. Yesterday, however, there was another option for area residents and about 200 of them decided to exercise it – the third Nashua Telegraph Run for Santa, a 6.2-mile race through the heart of Nashua.

“Stan Dutton won the race in 32:19, a little more than a minute off Bruce Butterworth’s course record of 31:17. … Second-place finisher Roger Nasatka finished in 32:32.

“Patti Sharry, who finished 50th overall with a time of 37:51, was a handy winner among the women.”

NOV. 4, 1965 – “With the aid of Roger Dussault’s 22 points, the Fairgrounds Falcons swooped down on Lawrence Central Catholic yesterday and demolished that junior varsity team, 30-12.

“The Falcons managed scores in every period but the third. Dussault carried the ball for 142 of his team’s total of 253 yards rushing.”

NOV. 5, 1970 – “A fired-up Bishop Guertin freshman-sophomore football squad surprised the previously unbeaten Nashua High freshman-sophomore team with a 16-0 victory Tuesday at Holman Stadium.

“Sophomore Kevin Fadden scored both Guertin touchdowns in leading the young Cardinals to the upset win over the Nashua yearlings, who had won their first six games.”

NOV. 6, 1975 – Another celebrated Telegraph scribe, managing editor John Stylianos, offered praise for local football coaches in his Nashua Area column.

“Among coaches deserving of commendation for their football teams’ outstanding performances are Joe Eaton of the Elks A team in Pop Warner League play, Ken Parady of the Nashua High Panthers and Bill Bowes of the University of New Hampshire Wildcats.

“We mention Joe because his club has won seven straight without giving up a point to rival elevens.

“Ken is enjoying his best season since he succeeded Charles “Buzz” Harvey to the helm. Barring injuries to key players and overconfidence, the Panthers should annex the state championship.

“Bill is having a tremendous year with the Wildcats, suffering but one loss, to the University of Delaware.”
