JUNE 20, 1945 – We begin with sports editor Frank Stawasz’s lost and found report:

“Doug Cooke, Bowlaway first sacker, is currently wondering what became of his shoes and coat which he left lying on the sod at the North Common softball diamond while he played ball against the Laton House a little over a week ago. When the game was over Cooke returned to the spot where his clothes were but they weren’t there anymore.

“Now Cooke is wondering whether some good Samaritan, thinking that the coat and shoes had been left behind, picked them up with the idea of returning them to their rightful owner, or whether someone just liked the coat and shoes and figured they’d fit and walked off with them.”

JUNE 21, 1960 – ” ‘It’s not forgotten,’ said Mayor Mario J. Vagge regarding the proposed construction of a cinder track at Holman Stadium for track and field events.

“He revealed construction may possibly be started this year. He said the main problem has been the selection of a suitable site within the stadium. Nashua High School this year won both the state indoor and outdoor track championships. The mayor said the cinder track would be laid out for high school use primarily, but would also be made available to both public and parochial schools and the general public.

“Earlier in the year the mayor approved an appropriation of $18,000 in the 1960 Park-Recreation commission budget for a track.”

The price would go up a bit as the years went by.

JUNE 21, 1965 – “Bill Phillips of Exeter High School piled up a record total of 8,610 points to capture the ninth annual Decathlon Championships sponsored by Nashua High and conducted here Wednesday.

“… Finishing second in the meet was Mike Demers of Nashua, who had a total of 7,410 points during the grueling test.”

JUNE 20, 1975 – “The Merrimack Pacers soccer team defeated Manchester’s Spartans 6-1 last night in New Hampshire Conference play, minor division.

“Ken Fothergill had three goals to pace Merrimack. Barry Pharris, Thane Bigwood and Brian Whitney also scored for the Merrimack booters. Tim Goodridge came up with eight saves.”

JUNE 21, 2017 – “Rick Harvey had a player meeting for the Hudson American Legion Post 48 baseball junior and senior program back in December. After sending out at least 60 emails, seven players showed up – and only one was there for the senior Legion team. He waited a couple more months, but by February he had only five players. Thus, while keeping the junior program, he shut down the senior team for at least this summer.

“Players from Alvirne and Campbell who were set to return just decided they did not want to play this summer,” Harvey, who not only is the GM for Hudson but is the state Legion baseball chairman, said in a recent email. “It killed me to cut the program, but in the end it was the only thing we could do.”

JUNE 20, 2018 – “The Merrimack and Portsmouth American Legion baseball teams launched their own little protest to the new rule about games being only seven innings. The two teams battled into the ninth in Tuesday night’s season opener, with Merrimack pulling out 2-1 thriller with a walk-off win.

“Justin Grassini, back from college at SUNY Cortland, earned the win with 2-1/3 innings of shutout relief, backing up a sparkling start on the hill from Pat Harrington.”
