JUNE 8, 1955 – “Charles Staples, secretary of the New Hampshire Golf Association, announced that Robert Johnson, winner of the state schoolboy golf championship, has been ruled ineligible and matches in the first division would be replayed to decide a new champion. The replay has been scheduled for Saturday at the Portsmouth Country Club.

“Johnson, who last Saturday defeated defending champion Karl Foster of Nashua in the finals, 3 and 1, and earlier eliminated Ray Brooks of Nashua, 1 up, was declared ineligible under the NHIAA eight-semester rule. … Under the eligibility rule no schoolboy can take part in more than eight semesters of sports activity during his his four-year high school period. The Portsmouth golfer last season had used up his eighth semester of competition.”

JUNE 8, 1965 – “Edwin Davis, a member of the state championship football team, has been awarded a scholarship at the University of Cornell, school officials announced today.

“Davis, who will join Gerge Tebbetts at the Ithica school, will study in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Tebbetts earlier was named the recipient of a Cornell scholarship and will study in the College of Arts and Sciences.”

JUNE 8, 1985 – “For the past week, Nashua Chiefs manager Walt Alcox has been preparing the team for its traditional opener against the Milford Indians.

“The current edition of the Chiefs, who have Jim Sanderson and Ray Oban as coaches, looks quite young. There aren’t many old Chiefs returning, Several members of the 1984 Senior Babe Ruth baseball team have opted to play for the Nashua Legion.

” ‘We have a lot of younger players this year,’ Alcox said. ‘I think we are in better shape than we were last year, though. This club is practically new, we lost a lot of people to the Legion.’ “

JUNE 8, 2017 – “Sometimes team meetings can actually work. Just ask the Souhegan High School girls lacrosse team. After the Sabers had lost to Londonderry by a goal back on May 9, coach Maren Petropulos got everyone together in a room, closed the door, and they hashed things out.

” ‘We were in there for a good hour, maybe more,’ Petropulos said. ‘Nothing bad came out of it.’ “

“In fact, a state championship came out of it.

“The Sabers went 9-0 after that pow-wow, including a thrilling 10-9 Division I title win over Bedford on Wednesday night at Southern New Hampshire University’s Larkin Field. It’s Souhegan’s first

championship since 2008.”
