Greenwood: Pats must say no to Dalton

By Alan Greenwood - Staff Writer | May 1, 2020

If there are any Andy Dalton fans out there, this is a gentle summary of my feelings on the Patriots paying for his services next season:

Please, don’t.

As for the rest of the us, the message amounts to this:

Are you truly hell-bent on hiring the anti-Tom Brady?

There’s nothing personal in this. Dalton may well be a wonderful human being.

As an NFL quarterback, he saves his worst moments for the most important ones. The anti-Brady if ever there was one.

Folks may not be quivering in excitement over seeing Jarrett Stidham at quarterback. But it makes more sense to find out what the kid has over the course of a season than hauling in a veteran whose career speaks for itself.

Dalton has had a few wonderful seasons statistically. In 2015 he was downright stupendous – a QB rating of 106.3 is nothing to take lightly.

Unfortunately, his career rating is 87.5. He has thrown 204 touchdown passes with 118 interceptions.

Most importantly, he has led his team to zero playoff victories. He is 0-for-4 with a QB rating of 55.7 with one touchdown and six interceptions.

If that doesn’t satisfy the beancounters, look up his complete career numbers.

As for the rest of us, Dalton has never taken the field in a big game and inspired anything greater than doubt.

If this is a rebuild – and what has Bill Belichck done the last few weeks to make it look like anything else – hand Jarrett Stidham the keys and let’s see how he does.

LIGHT SKIES – Kudos to Nashua Athletic Director Lisa Gingras for offering a way to make sure North and South seniors are not forgotten during the stay-at-home period.

The lights at Holman and Stellos stadiums will be lit up Wednesday night at 8:20 and stay on for 20 minutes, in honor of the Class of 2020.

“It’s just a small recognition of everything those kids have missed,” Gingras told our friend and colleague Tom King. “Yes, this came from the athletic department, but it’s for everyone.”

At the moment, even small gestures are greatly welcomed.

TIME TRAVEL: May 3, 1994 – “If there was any lingering uncertainty about how far the Bishop Guertin High School baseball team can take its act this year, consider those doubts erased.

“There will be time to worry about that when the Class L tournament rolls around, but for now the Cardinals will cherish the sweet taste of victory that came from beating Pinkerton Academy and its ace hurler, Jay Yennaco, 1-0 Monday afternoon at Holman Stadium.”
