Time Travel: Golfers have always wanted to be hacking away by now

While waiting for the NFL to report its findings in last fall’s ultra-silly Patriots video scandal in Cincinnati …
APRIL 16, 1955 – “A Nashua Country Club Senior Golfers Association, made up of NCC members 55 years and older is being formed here, it was announced today.
“Thomas J. Leonard Sr., will act as chairman of the group for the coming season. Thursday evening, April 21, a meeting of all interested candidates will be held in the Country Club Grill Room at 7:30 for the purpose of formulating final club plans and scheduling of tournaments for the 1955 campaign.”
Was age 55 really considered the dividing line between middle-age and senior?
APRIL 16, 1960 – One of the legendary Telegraph newsroom leaders, Fred Dobens, offered some news about another in his “Around the Town” column.
“The most disgruntled person in town, believe us, is our sports editor and photographer, Mike Shalhoup, whose doctor has told him no golf for at least a month. Mike has a leg injury to which he has to cater for that time and no one around here likes golf better than Mike.”
APRIL 16, 1965 – “Nashua High’s golf team, the defending state champion, will be engaged in 10 matches this year prior to the state tournament at the Nashua Country Club on May 28 and 29.
“Coach Lucien Bernard issued a general call for candidates yesterday and began preliminary practice sessions. The group was led by Paul Moriarty, the defending individual state champion, and Maurice Dichard, one of the leading contenders last year. Others expected to make a good showing this year are
Tom Foran, Steve Crosby, Dana Levesque and Dick Goulet.”
And in other news that day …
“Jack Donohue, Holy Cross’ new basketball coach, is concentrating on recruiting players today, but apparently hehas missed out on his No. 1 target, 7-foot-1 Lew Alcindor.
“Donohue, who coach Alcindor for four years at Power Memorial High School, accepted the Holy Cross job Monday.
“Lew told me today,” Donohue said Thursday, “he is not really interested in Holy Cross. He wants a larger school in a larger city.”
UCLA fit those requirements for Alcindor, who later changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
