Time Travel: Raise a toast to John Havlicek

By Alan Greenwood - Staff Writer | Apr 14, 2020

This is the 55th anniversary of Celtics all-time voice Johnny Most’s signature call.

Don’t forget to give thanks for 76ers Hall of Famer Hal Greer and his assist in helping John Havlicek make the most referenced steal of an inbounds pass in NBA history.

From five years earlier we offer this from Mike’s Musings, authored by the venerable sports editor Mike Shalhoup:

April 15, 1960 – “There’s no getting around it; the greatest era in the history of golf is at hand for Nashua and Hudson.

“Thanks to television and President Eisenhower, coupled with the fact that no less than four courses will be in operation in the immediate area this summer, club officials are looking forward to the heaviest traffic ever.

“And the beginning isn’t too far off either. Whip-Poor-Will in Hudson and Riverside in Nashua are planning on Fast Day weekend (April 23) openings. Green Meadow, also in Hudson (Phil Friel’s new course) has set Memorial Day (May 28) as the target date of the inaugural and the Nashua Country Club is hoping its 18-hole layout will be in shape in the next couple of weeks.

“… They say once the golf bug bites, there’s no relief or cure.”

From another Telegraph legend, managing editor John Stylianos:

April 15, 1975 – “Attitude was stressed by Dave Otto, head basketball coach of Bishop Guertin High School, in a talk featuring the 19th annual Elks-Park Recreation South Biddy Basketball League dinner on April 9.

“It was our first attendance of a league dinner, held in the Nashua High cafetorium. Noel Trottier, director of recreation, was toastmaster.

“Coach Otto a veteran coach and player, discussed professional basketball stars and emphasized the importance of a player’s attitude.”

Feel free here to insert your own thoughts on the attitude betrayed by too many current professional basketball stars.

April 15, 1985 – “The Bishop Guertin High School baseball team is off to a great start while Merrimack High School is struggling, and the plight of both was very much om evidence Saturday when they met on the Tomahawks’ home diamond.

“Guertin, which combined 16 hits with the two-hit pitching of Steve Piwowarski, scalping the ‘Hawks 11-1. The 3-0 Cardinals put the game early against the 0-3 Hawks, scoring two runs in the first, keyed by Jerry Tardif’s double and singes by Walter Wrobleski and Jack Greene. An RBI single by Peter Birch made it 3-0 in the second.”
